Game Report

With the Canadiens enjoying a 4-0 lead after the first period, the commentator on the broadcast confidently declared that the Canadiens didn’t need more goals on this night; that they should just make the safe play for the final 40 minutes. Always bad advice to sit back.

It was a wild one late into the night on the West coast. Many Habs fans who went to bed before the game was final will undoubtedly wake up to a surprise.

This was a game filled with mistakes and turnovers from both teams as well as a healthy dose of skill and talent. The goaltending was not pretty at either end from all three netminders who appeared in this game.

And perhaps most importantly, Montreal lost the services of Sean Monahan. In the second period, the Canadiens announced that Monahan would not be returning to the game.

It was another sleepy start for the Canadiens with the Canucks outshooting the visitors 9-1 from the drop of the puck. In the latter half of the first period, the Canadiens scored four times in under eight-and-a-half minutes.

With the Habs on cruise control, Vancouver took over the game in the latter part of the second period. The Canucks scored twice before the end of the frame to claw back into this game.

It was a barmy third period with the two teams scoring a total of six times to be deadlocked after 60 minutes. Elias Pettersson scored 13 seconds into overtime as Mike Matheson lost an edge and went down.
