It doesn’t get better than this: a shellacking of the Toronto Maple Leafs by the Montreal Canadiens in the middle of a dreadful season. Yes, yes, there are those who are concerned about the Canadiens draft position, but for this one night, it was all very worth putting it out of our collective minds.

Leaf supporters have been showing up in Facebook groups and Twitter feeds to mercilessly ridicule Habs fans for the state of their team. So this was indeed a very satisfying result.

In addition to being a good night for Habs fans, it was a huge confidence boost to the team. The Canadiens top line had a good night on the score sheet. They used their speed and transition game to leave the Leafs flat-footed. 

But, perhaps more importantly, was the work of the Jake Evans line. Evans with Paul Byron and Rem Pitlick did a good job shutting down the big guns for Toronto. While they gave up a lot of shots, few were grade ‘A’ scoring chances.

The Maple Leafs managed just one high-danger scoring chance in the third period.

Also full credit to the Habs penalty-killers who were perfect against the league’s most dangerous power-play.

The Canadiens are suddenly on a three-game winning streak and within one point of climbing out of the NHL’s basement.
