Game Report

On the final leg of a four-game road trip, the Canadiens played their match against the defending Stanley Cup champions. Tampa Bay looked disinterested and sloppy in the first period but still had a 2-0 lead by intermission.

Yes, they are that good. They can turn their talent on and off at will.

By contrast, the Canadiens worked their tales off just to compete. They won a lot of the races to loose pucks on this night. And Montreal was the much better team at 5-on-5 play.

The Habs outscored the Bolts 4-1 at even strength. The Lightning relied on their special team’s play scoring a shorthanded goal and twice on the power-play.

Canadiens fans not only were pleased with the win but had to be celebrating the performances of their young players.

Jordan Harris, in his first NHL game, looked poised and played a solid 15:55. Harris made smart decisions, had a good stick and showed off his excellent skating stride.

Cole Caufield scored his 15th goal of the season to open the scoring for the Canadiens midway through the second period.

Ryan Poehling made a beautiful backhand pass to set up a one-timer by Jesse Ylonen for the Canadiens tying goal. Ylonen also used his speed to make key defensive plays.

And Nick Suzuki, still just 22-years-old, was the shootout hero beating Brian Elliott for the win.

Post-game Quotes

Marty St. Louis

  • “Loved his game. [Jordan Harris’] skating is so effortless and he gave us some good minutes.”
  • “What I liked about the game was our commitment, mentally, how well we played five-on-five.”

Joel Edmundson

  • “We were playing a tough team to play against, which is among the best in the league for a reason. Our young defenders played with calm and determination. It was special to see ‘Harry’ (Jordan Harris) in his first game. He looked like a veteran. He looked very good.”

Jordan Harris

  • “The game is definitely faster, but my few practices helped prepare me for that. Guys are also stronger and I will have to try to get better at killing games faster. The players are faster and smarter, the level of skill is also raised, as is the knowledge of the game.”
