Game Report

Face it. The 2021-22 edition of the Montreal Canadiens are a one period team. For 20 minutes the Habs can compete with any team in the NHL. In fact they can even dominate for a frame.

Remember how the Canadiens dominated the Vegas Golden Knights in the first period? Shots were 20-1 and the Habs took a 2-0 lead. Then Vegas scored five straight goals to win it.

Montreal had good first periods against the Kings and again tonight against the Bruins. And faded in both.

The Canadiens have scored first in eight of their 17 games but have won only two of them. That’s a one period team.

Sam Monteambeault can appear to be an NHL goalie for one period but then allows soft goals. Dominique Ducharme’s tactics can work for a period but then opposition coaching staff make adjustments.

Jeff Petry has not looked like a top-pairing defenceman this season for any amount of time. In fact, if not for the play of David Savard, Petry would have to be considered the Habs worst defenceman this season.

Playing well for one period and then collapsing speaks to a lack of confidence. One of the worst traits of Bergevin-era teams is how the GM and his head coach have stripped the confidence of their players.
