Game Report

With each team playing the second game of back-to-back matinees and both having suffered overtime losses in game one, the Habs and Oilers had something to prove on Super Bowl Sunday.

After a great start by Montreal including a power-play goal by Shea Weber just 2:23 into the contest, the Canadiens played a sloppy, uninspired game. The Habs executed poorly in the neutral zone, were undisciplined, and spent a good portion of the game chasing the puck.

Brendan Gallagher was invisible for most of the game, Max Domi hurt his team with dumb penalties in the offensive zone and Jonathan Drouin was the worst player on the ice looking disinterested and committing numerous turnovers.

Despite poor performances overall, there were instances of redemption. With his focus and emotions properly channeled, Domi picked up an important goal early in the second period. Drouin managed one good shift in the match scoring an impressive goal for the game-winner in overtime.

While the Habs did a good job limiting Connor McDavid 5-on-5, Leon Draisaitl and McDavid were lethal on the power-play scoring two goals with the man advantage and another just two seconds after the Habs penalty had expired.

Carey Price was brilliant all game giving up essentially three power-play goals. Price made two spectacular saves in overtime as McDavid and Draisaitl were gifted with a 2-on-0.

Jersperi Kotkaniemi continues to rise to the occasion. His game-tying goal in the third period was his fourth in the past eight games. Tomas Tatar was strong all game particularly playing a key role in Kotkaniemi’s eighth of the season.

What Did They Say?

 Post-game Quotes
Claude Julien
  • “I think the way [Jesperi Kotkaniemi] is playing it’s important for me to find him some ice time. But I’m being honest, I’m still the guy that doesn’t want to necessarily put him against the other team’s top line because of experience, that’s it. He’s going to play, eventually he’s going to be playing against those top lines. I think if anything I want to find him more ice time.”
  • “I need to put him in different situations where he didn’t have the opportunity to be there at the beginning of the year. But he’s evolved and he’s improving. We’re going to give him a little bit more all the time and never give him too much. So that’s where I’m trying to thread that needle.”
  • “Carey (Price) made some unbelievable big saves. When you have those [Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl] on the ice, there’s a good chance they’ll have a scoring opportunity. We had a little bit of luck, which is good because we didn’t have it yesterday.”

Shea Weber

  • “[The Oilers scored] almost three power play goals. I thought we did a pretty good job as a team limiting them 5-on-5; I don’t think they had a lot of chances. That’s what you want to do as much as you can. We thought we deserved a little bit of a better fate yesterday, but each point means so much at this point of the year.”
  • “It’s going to be an exciting stretch. Hopefully, this weekend started us off right. We have a game here every other night for awhile.”
