Game Report

Two teams in the bottom third of the standings. Bad ice at the Bell Centre. And players, both in and out of the lineup, suffering from a flu virus.

Mix it all together, it was the perfect recipe for a terribly, sloppy game. And that’s exactly what we witnessed.

The Canadiens best collective asset, speed, was rendered impotent as the Ducks clogged up the neutral zone and disrupted the Habs forecheck. And when they had the puck, particularly in their own end, Montreal players were only too happy to turn it over.

The Habs committed an astonishing 27 giveaways against the Ducks. Jeff Petry, who struggled without Shea Weber ahead of him in the lineup, led the way with six giveaways. Ben Chiarot had three.

Fortunately, Montreal converted their first power-play opportunity, on a goal by Nick Suzuki. After a timely second-period goal by Brendan Gallagher, the Habs hand the keys to Carey Price who was outstanding, making 35 saves for the win.

Despite his poor defensive outing, Petry scored the game-winner just 25 seconds into overtime on a stiff wrister.

The Canadiens will practice st 11:30 am. on Friday morning to prepare for their Saturday night matchup with the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Bell Centre.
