Game Report

Where was this effort against Columbus and Carolina?

The Canadiens are in the position that they must run the table to even have the faintest chance of making the playoffs. So this was the first of four ‘elimination’ games.

Montreal played a solid road game that received a first period boost from their anemic power-play. In storybook fashion, former Jet Joel Armia potted his 12th goal of the season.

The Habs did a very good job using their wings and skating the puck out of danger. The Canadiens defence did a good job of boxing out Winnipeg forwards. And Carey Price did the rest particularly in the third period when the Jets pressed.

Claude Julien’s questionable decision to sit Jesperi Kotkaniemi. With two players, Matthew Peca and Nicolas Deslauriers, who have spent the majority of the past 15 games in the press box on his wings, Nate Thompson’s icetime plummeted. The Habs fourth line was essentially unusable in the third period when Montreal was protecting a lead.

While the Canadiens won they were unable to pick up any ground as Carolina and Columbus each won their games. Those two teams will each make up their games in hand on Sunday as the Hurricanes take on the Penguins and the Blue Jackets visit the Sabres.

What Did They Say?

 Post-game Quotes
Claude Julien
  • “We have one week left in the season. We want to play well the rest of the way to give ourselves a chance to prolong our year. To do that, next game we’re going to have to play the same way against a good team.”
Carey Price
  • “We’re still alive. We’re just trying to focus on games as they come.”
  • “I thought right from the start of the game we seemed to be firing on all cylinders and playing well. Everybody contributed tonight. It could have been one of our better games all season.”

Shea Weber

  • “We’re not giving up. We’re not out yet. Six more points are available for us. We’re going to take the next game [against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday] and try to win that one and we’ll see what happens.”
Joel Armia
  • “We just need to keep playing like that every game. Every game is a big game right now. I think we just kept it simple and played really fast through the whole 60 minutes. That was the key tonight.”

Jets forward Mathieu Perreault

  • “They had a good gap. We didn’t really have anywhere to go with it. We couldn’t generate much. You have to give them credit, they played a good game.”
