“It would have been nice to reward [Carey Price] with two points. Obviously he stood on his head and played well for us.” — Shea Weber.

Always understated, the captain was quietly seething. So was Brendan Gallagher as he twice curtly lectured reporters that “there are no moral victories” when asked if he was happy that the Canadiens picked up one point for the overtime loss.

“We had a lead,” added Gallagher.

Montreal’s goal came courtesy of Paul Byron but the fact that they owned a lead at all was 100 per cent due to Carey Price.

The Hurricanes dominated the Habs in the first and third periods. And even in the second, Carolina had several dangerous scoring chances.

Overall shots attempts were 91-47 for Carolina. The Hurricanes had 40 shots on goal, 37 scoring chances and 20 high danger scoring chances.

Carey Price was phenomenal. Price made spectacular saves on Carolina’s snipers. Teuvo Teravainen and Sebastian Aho were stoned by Price on breakaways.

The Canadiens goaltender played shutout hockey for more than 54 minutes, and for a large portion of it, single-handedly. 

Price’s teammates could not hold the lead however. A Trevor van Riemsdyk point shot glanced off Jordie Benn’s knee and it was a tie game.

In overtime, possession is king. Somehow, Phillip Danault forgot this basic tenet of hockey. Then, Jeff Petry forgot too.

And it was over.

A brilliant performance by Price was wasted. A huge opportunity to pick up an important two points was lost. And almost as important, a chance to deny a playoff rival a win was squandered.

The Canadiens have had a good week but this one hurt.
