Game Report

The Colorado Avalanche have one of the best lines in hockey in Nathan MacKinnon, Gabriel Landeskog and Mikko Rantanen. The trio also give the Avs one of the top fine power-plays in the league. Shutting them down was priority one for the Montreal Canadiens.

With Carey Price’s 43 career shutout, just under 25 solid minutes by Shea Weber, domination at the faceoff dot and excellent penalty-killing, the Canadiens held the Colorado big line scoreless.

The Avalanche have now lost nine of their last 10 games.

Phillip Danault had two assists and won 71 per cent of his faceoffs. Artturi Lehkonen was all over the ice making smart plays and forechecking aggressively. Away from Jonathan Drouin, Max Domi’s effort level was through the roof matching the intensity of Lehkonen and Joel Armia.

The Canadiens offence took more than two periods to get started but capitalized on a goaltender, Semyon Varlamov, who has won just twice since November 30th. Brett Kulak scored the game-winner with a short-handed wrister.

Montreal moves back into a playoff position grabbing one of the wild card spots. The Habs will travel to Boston on Sunday for a game at the TD Garden on Monday night. They return home for a date at the Bell Centre against the Florida Panthers on Tuesday.

What Did They Say?

 Post-game Quotes
Claude Julien
  • “We wanted to play a full 60 minutes, and that’s exactly what we did. We wanted to take time and space away from a team that capitalizes on those types of situations. I think we did a good job with that as well. We had a good game from start to finish.”
  • “The guys skated tonight. It took some time to score, but that’s the way things are in the League right now. We had chances and their goalie did his job.”

Shea Weber

  • “It was a good game tonight. We brought a lot of energy. We could’ve scored earlier in the game, but we continued to work and we won.”

Carey Price

  • “Obviously, [Brett Kulak] came out with a big goal there and we played pretty solid on the defensive side of the puck tonight.”

Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar

  • “Our power play kind of struggled tonight. I thought Montreal did a really nice job up ice disrupting our rhythm, and we didn’t get set up really like we normally do. And we kind of struggled through that, and then they ended up giving up a goal against, too, on the face-off there at the end. … So it turns out to be the difference in the hockey game.”

  • “I mean, if we can step up on one of those power plays and find a way to put one in, and you know, it’s a different hockey game. But we were unable to do that, and we’ve got to give Montreal credit for that.”
