McGuire: "Subban will probably make this team (Team Canada)"

From TSN’s Pierre McGuire:

MONTREAL

Prospect at Camp: P.K. Subban (2nd round in 2007).
McGuire: “He’s one of those wild broncos out there. He gets the puck and you just don’t know what he’s going to do with it. But he competes hard and he’s very quick. He makes some risky plays, but he is a returning player. Canada lost Karl Alzner, who was a star last year, and they are probably going to lose Drew Doughty. Playing in last year’s tournament means Subban will probably make this team.”

    But at least he is a strong candidate for the team, which is more than can be said for any other Canadian born Hab prospect this year.

  2. Also, Greg Pateryn was added to the USA Evaluation Camp, after being overlooked with the initial invitations. He is in pretty tough for a spot however, the Americans have a very deep group of defensemen to choose from.

    In reading Pierre McGuire’s comments about P.K. Subban, you get the impression that he isn’t exactly convinced that Subban has enough of a two way game. Subban has come a long way with his defensive game but there are still some non believer like McGuire who aren’t quite convinced yet.

    As far as Greg Pateryn is concerned, just the fact he was invited to the USA Evaluation Camp tells you how far he has progressed over the last 6-8 months. As you said, he will have a hard time making a very strong defensive corp but just the fact he was added to the camp speaks volumes about the direction he’s headed.
