As for McCabe agreeing to waive his no-movement clause and take his large contract and poor defensive game to the sunny south, the hinge was a $2-million US bonus that the Leafs are due to pay on Sept. 1. Tuesday is Sept. 2, so figure the deal to be done then.

“Hopefully,” Leafs general manager Cliff Fletcher said. “We’ll know on Tuesday whether this will be resolved. I can’t confirm it at this time. There are issues that have to be resolved, and I hope they would be by then. But when you have nothing in writing by either party, there is nothing to talk about until it is resolved.”

McCabe’s contract will eat up $5.75 million against the salary cap next season and in each of the following two years. Van Ryn would cost the Leafs $2.9 million this season and next.
