Game Report

If it feels like a Habs win has been a long time coming, it has. Tonight’s overtime victory was only the second win for the Canadiens since Christmas.

The last Montreal win was almost one month ago in Dallas. Since then, the Canadiens have gone on a 10-game losing streak. Three of those losses have come under the direction of interim head coach Marty St. Louis, who recorded the first win of his coaching career.

It was a feel-good night for the coach and for veteran Paul Byron, playing his 500th NHL game. Byron opened the scoring with his first of the season on a play engineered by Artturi Lehkonen. 

Jeff Petry played one of his better games of the season. The 34-year-old had two assists including setting up the game-winner, in 24 minutes of action. His play had to be reassuring to the scouts in attendance, as teams look to obtain his services for a playoff run this season.

It was also encouraging to catch a sighting of Brendan Gallagher. The 29-year-old has been a shell of his former self this season to date. While Gallagher didn’t appear on the scoring sheet, he was far more engaged than he has been at times this season.

The Canadiens will head out for a one-game road trip in Long Island to face the New York Islanders on Sunday afternoon.
