Game Report

With a long layoff, the Canadiens were rested for tonight’s contest. And with more than 20 players exiting COVID-19 protocol, the lineup was more NHL than AHL. But Montreal came out flat and showed very little energy throughout the contest.

Sure, the Canadiens showed a little push back in the penalty-filled third period, but by then, the result was no longer in doubt. Montreal’s offence never got on track in this game. High-danger scoring chances were rare for the visitors, with just one in each period.

The Canadiens couldn’t even get a boost from their power-play as it was scoreless in five opportunities extending their streak to 0-for-24 with the man advantage. Adding insult to injury, Bruins forward Brad Marchand scored a shortie to complete his hat-trick.

While the team has been hampered with injuries and COVID-19 cases this season, tonight’s game reminded fans just how poorly constructed this roster is without the team’s two most-important leaders.

It is why the next nine weeks are crucial to the future success of this organization. Jeff Gorton and his new general manager have to shed players, contracts and salaries to provide flexibility and to set the Canadiens in a new direction.
