On this day in hockey history… 1964 — The Montreal Canadiens acquired the rights to 16-year old Ken Dryden from the Boston Bruins. 1993 — The New Jersey Devils name Jacques Lemaire as their head coach. 1994 — The Toronto Maple Leafs made a transaction that included Wendel Clark going to Quebec and Mats Sundin heading the other way.

► Shaw Signed

  • As speculated, the Canadiens signed newly-acquired forward Andrew Shaw to a long-term deal. The six-year contract is reportedly worth $23.4 million and is heavily front-loaded.
  • While Shaw was comfortable playing up and down the lineup in Chicago, he was the fourth line centre on a healthy Blackhawks roster.
  • The 24-year-old had 14 goals, 20 assists for 34 points in 2015-16.
  • Shaw was a fifth round pick, 139th overall by the Blackhawks in 2011. The Canadiens traded two early round second round picks, 39th (Alex DeBrincat) and 45th (Chad Krys) overall to the Blackhawks to acquire Shaw.

► HNIC Back on Track

  • Full credit to Scott Moore, President of Sportsnet & NHL Properties, Rogers who culled the broadcast herd on Monday in an effort to bring back knowledgable hockey fans to Hockey Night in Canada.
  • HNIC host George Stroumboulopoulos was fired making way for a return of Ron MacLean to his former role. Stroumboulopoulos was justifiably criticized for his sparse hockey knowledge, misplaced political commentary and juvenile wardrobe.
  • Also dismissed from the broadcast were P.J. Stock, Damian Cox, Billy Jaffe, Corey Hirsch, Leah Hextall and Chantal Desjardins.
  • MacLean and David Amber will be the studio hosts. Elliotte Friedman, Kelly Hrudey, and Nick Kypreos will return as panelists.
  • The HNIC news won’t be applauded by Gary Bettman who had a say in the short-lived new format, but that is probably a good thing.

► Canadiens Qualify Three

  • In the days leading up to the commencement of free agency, the Canadiens submitted qualifying offers to three players, Andrew Shaw, Daniel Carr, Philip Danault.
  • A short time after the news about qualifying offers was released, it was announced that the Canadiens had signed Andrew Shaw to a six-year contract.
  • The five players were not be given qualifying offers are Darren Dietz, Lucas Lessio, Michaël Bournival, Mac Bennett and Morgan Ellis. Dietz and Lessio will become free agents, the jury is still out on the possibility for Morgan Ellis to return next season.
  • There was some speculation regarding whether the team would return Michaël Bournival to the organization with his recent struggles to stay on the ice, making this move highly precipitated.
  • With the way Lessio look relatively competent in his 12 games as a member of the Canadiens, the conjecture among the fan base was that had bought at least a shot at cracking the clogged bottom-six.

► No QO for You

  • Former Canadiens Devante Smith-Pelly and Jarred Tinordi were not offered qualifying offers by the Devils and Coyotes respectfully.

► New Deal for Tick

  • In January, Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin sent Dustin Tokarski to the Anaheim Ducks for Max Friberg. Tokarski spent the majority of his season with the AHL San Diego Gulls.
  • On Monday, the Ducks signed Tokarski to a one-year contract extension.

► HHOF Class of 2016

  • Rogie Vachon will be the 57th member of the Montreal Canadiens organization to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Vachon patrolled the crease for the Habs for the first five years of his NHL career.
  • Vachon will join Eric Lindros, Sergei Makarov and Pat Quinn as HHOF inductees.
  • One of the most influential on-ice players of his generation, Lindros’ mix of brute force, skating ability, shot and all-around talent made his injury-shortened career all the more devastating to witness.
  • Over 760 career NHL games, Lindros recorded 372 goals and 865 points along with 1,398 penalty minutes and 24 goals and 57 points in 53 career playoff games, in which he never won a Stanley Cup.
  • The three-time 40 goal scorer won the Hart memorial trophy in 1994-95 along with the Lester B. Pearson trophy in that same year in which he scored 29 goals and recorded 70 points in 46 games.

► Shipachyov Situation Revived

  • Vadim Shipachyov was supplanted in the MVP voting by the tantalizing narrative of having 18-year old Patrik Laine take home that honour at the World Championships, and another situation previously perceived as a disappointment might be turning around.
  • According to journalist Aivis Kalnins, Shipachyov doesn’t need to terminate the contract he has in the KHL to sign with an NHL club after June 30th.
  • Elliotte Friedman also added fuel to this as he said there still may be a possibility for the Russian centreman to head overseas and join an NHL team next season.
  • “There are rumblings tonight Vadim Shipachyov, who we were told could not come to the NHL for 2016-17, may still be a possibility. Let’s see where this one goes, too.” Friedman noted via his Twitter account.
  • Shipachyov scored 17 goals and recorded 60 points in 54 games as captain of St. Petersburg SKA last season, finding the score sheet 16 times in 15 games during the postseason.

► Higgins Bought Out

  • It’s been a tough week for former Canadiens forwards which have for a long time been prophesied as have this fate dealt to them, as the Vancouver Canucks have bought out Chris Higgins.
  • Higgins was placed on waivers yesterday by the Canucks for the purpose of buying out the 33-year old winger, whom had spent the past six seasons in the organization at one point.
  • The former Canadiens second liner is in the midst of a degradation that’s seen his point total depreciate over at least 70 games since the 2011-12 season, where he scored 18 goals and had 43 points.
  • Plan divulging and legality tight-walking aficionado Jim Beninng attempted to deal Higgins at the trade deadline this year but to no avail, as the former first round pick was demoted to the Utica of the AHL where he had nine goals and 13 points in 22 games.

► Chiasson Dealt

  • The Ottawa Senators have finally acted on what many believed to be the future for some time as they dealt Alex Chiasson to the Calgary Flames in exchange for defenceman Patrick Sieloff.
  • Chiasson’s agent speculated some time ago that his client wouldn’t return as a member of the Senators organization next season, which came to fruition yesterday.
  • Chiasson, a piece of the transaction that saw the Sens send Jason Spezza to the Dallas Stars, had 13 goals and 35 points in 79 games in his rookie season, recording eight goals and 14 points in 77 games last season with Ottawa.
  • Sieloff is a former second round pick of the Flames in 2012 and made his NHL debut this season, in his one and only game with Calgary he scored his first career NHL goal after playing 52 games in the AHL.

► Predators Re-sign Forsberg

  • The Nashville Predators have locked up winger Filip Forsberg long term following a career season, signing the soon-to-be 22-year old to a six-year extension worth $36 million.
  • The Preds acquired Forsberg in the infamous trade that sent the prolific Martin Erat to the nation’s capital, a move I’m sure no Canadiens fan has ever felt a homogeneous feeling about.
  • In his rookie season the Swedish winger scored 26 goals with 64 points in a full 82 game season on an offensively decrepit Predators team who made the acquisition of Ryan Johansen last season.
  • His softmore campaign brought more of the same success as Forsberg increased his goal total to 33 and recorded one more point than the preceding season, although he only had four points in 14 playoff games.
