► Day off

  • The Canadiens have the day off on Sunday as they rest before taking to the road for a three-game Western road trip this week. They are scheduled to practice in Vancouver on Monday.
  • The Habs set an NHL record on Saturday night by starting the season with nine consecutive regulation wins. Here’s our game report: Recap – Leafs vs Canadiens: Price the Difference as Habs Stay Perfect

► Reway demoted

  • A couple weeks ago we reported on some potential turmoil between Canadiens prospect Martin Reway and Sparta Praha head coach Josef Jandač. It appears that those seeds of tension have taken root.
  • Reway was demoted to the Czech league equivalent of the AHL due to a disagreement with his coach about ice time. The former fourth overall pick was the league’s leading scorer with 15 points in 14 games.
  • A few weeks ago, Jandač voiced his discontent with the 20-year old stating that “He is always complaining about being in pain, there is always something. It is rather complicated with him. Once he plays amazingly, the following game he is invisible man on ice.”
  • It is also being reported that Reway requested a trade from Sparta Praha.
  • Another odd twist to this story is that it seemed a though the two sides were discussing a contract extension as of this week however those plans have been shelved.
  • The team offered this in an official release, “The player told us through his agent that he did not want to play for Sparta at the moment. Playing for our club should be considered an honour for every player, and if the situation is such, we have no other choice than to exclude him from the squad.”

► Did you see the Scherbak snipe?

  • Canadiens prospect Nikita Scherbak scored his first goal as a pro on Saturday for the St. John’s IceCaps. The IceCaps went on to beat the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 5-4 at Mile One Centre.

► Distant relatives

  • Justin Trudeau, freshly elected Prime Minister of Canada, and Max Pacioretty, newly appointed Canadiens captain, are two examples of leadership and as it turns out, the two have more in common than a personality trait.
  • According to genealogist Stephen White, Trudeau and Pacioretty are ninth cousins. Their roots are in the Savoie brothers who settled in Quebec City in the 1750’s. Pacioretty is related to Jean-Baptiste Savoie and Justin Trudeau is related to Margaret Thibodeau who was married to François Savoie.

► Roberts passes

  • Over the past 10 months or so, the Canadiens have lost numerous members of their organization and the entire league lost another one of its alumni Friday morning.
  • At the age of 75, Jimmy Roberts passed away due to cancer. The disease was diagnosed just a couple of weeks ago.
  • Chicago Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman remembers the enforcer saying, “He was a self-made player. He came out of Port Hope, a small town near Peterborough, and he wasn’t rated as an NHL player. The people that ran the Canadiens knew how important that kind of player was on a good team. He came with his work boots on every day, and that’s a big asset for a player on a team that’s got a lot of stars.”
  • Roberts was a five-time Stanley Cup champion and played in over 1000 NHL games with 126 goals and 320 points to his name.
  • He also had a 20-year coaching career that started with him being an assistant coach with the Sabres and ended with him occupying the same role in St. Louis, a city in which he is beloved.
  • Roberts won back-to-back AHL championships from 1989-91 and was a head coach for one season in the NHL with Hartford Whalers in which the team, was eliminated in the first round.

► Just a miscommunication?

  • Is he Russian? American? Since the former third overall pick was selected, there has been some confusion about Alex Galchenyuk’s origins. After four years, the truth has finally come out.

► He’s baaack!

  • At a certain point, some things just aren’t funny any more and become sad, this is the case with the St. Louis Blues’ injury situation.
  • Top-six forward Jaden Schwartz injured his left leg during Friday mornings practice and he went to the hospital to undergo further evaluation.
  • “Yeah, he shot the puck and then the puck bounced off. He went to reach back for the rebound, kind of lost his edge and kind of came back into me and into the mesh of the net. So I don’t really know. … I haven’t seen him or talked to anybody about it, so I don’t know the scope of it. Hopefully he’s alright,” said goaltender Brian Elliott on Friday afternoon.
  • The injury plagued Blues are also without Patrik Berglund, Paul Stastny, Kevin Shattenkirk and Robby Fabbri who are out with injuries.

► Demers suspended

  • After the lack of a suspension for Zac Rinaldo the presumption was that Jason Demers, who’s hit was less severe than Rinaldo’s, wouldn’t be suspended for his hit on Nick Bonino. That preconceived notion would end up being incorrect.
  • In the Stars’ 4-1 win versus the Pittsburgh Penguins Jason Demers elbowed ‘Pens centreman Nick Bonino an was subsequently dished out a two game suspension by the NHL.
  • “I just went in and tried to counter the hit a little bit too early. I hope he’s alright. I wasn’t intending to hit him in the head or anything like that,” said Demers.
  • The Dorval, Quebec native was dealt to the Stars last year in exchange for Brendan Dillon whose contract negotiations weren’t going anywhere before he was dealt.

► Leafs lose a pair

  • After being rumoured to be available against the Canadiens on Saturday night, both Jake Gardiner and Tyler Bozak were both placed on the injured reserve.
  • Bozak suffered his lower body injury on October 16th against the Blue Jackets and Gardiner suffered an undisclosed injury on the next day against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
  • Nick Spalding and Mark Arcobello moved around the Leafs’ lineup to fill the hole in the lineup left by Bozak and Scott.
  • Harrington moved up a pairing to fill in for Jake Gardiner’s absence.
