	On this day in hockey history… 1967 — Los Angeles Kings played their first NHL game, and came away with a 4-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers, at the Long Beach Arena, in California.  1978 — 17-year-old Wayne Gretzky played in his first pro hockey game, a 6-3 Indianapolis Racers’ loss to Winnipeg, in the WHA.  1979 — Wayne Gretzky scored his first NHL goal, when the Oilers tied Vancouver 4-4 in Edmonton. Glen Hanlon was the victim of Gretzky’s first goal.

The Canadiens were on the ice at 1:30 pm. in Ottawa on Friday for practice ahead of Saturday’s game against the Senators.

Brian Flynn is recovering from a neck injury. Carey Price is at home suffering from a severe case of the flu. Torrey Mitchell was on the ice for practice despite not finishing the game in Buffalo. Jeff Petry was back on the second pairing with Andrei Markov. Mikhail Sergachev and Zach Redmond will likely be in the press box on Saturday.  With a roster spot being needed for Petry’s return, Sven Andrighetto was placed on waivers.

► Price Sick

• The likes of Alexander Radulov and Paul Byron are two among others in the Canadiens locker room subjected to a virus, which has now reached Carey Price.
• Al Montoya made the first start of the season Thursday night in the wake of Price’s absence, and it’s unclear when he’ll return to action.
• Price didn’t make the trip with the team which started out in Buffalo last night. Michel Therrien confirmed that Carey Price would not be available for Saturday’s game in Ottawa.
• Price missed the majority of last season due to a lower-body injury which was surmised by many to be a right-knee injury.

Medical update: C. Price: severe case of flu, accompanied by fever, is taking antibiotics, resting at home, evaluated daily by Dr. Mulder.

► Friberg gets the ‘C’

• Max Friberg has been named the captain of the St. John’s IceCaps for the 2016-17 season. Alternates will be Mark Barberio and Jacob De La Rose.

► Matteau Punished

Stefan Matteau will miss the first 2 games of the #IceCaps season to serve suspension from March. (Illegal check to the head). @TheAHLReport

► Pateryn Subs for Petry

• Jeff Petry was dealing with a lower-body injury, deemed day-to-day, and thus, for the first game of the Canadiens season, Greg Pateryn was inserted in his spot in the lineup.
• Pateryn played very well alongside Andrei Markov on the team’s second pairing recording almost 23 minutes in ice-time on Thursday night in Buffalo.
• Pateryn had a phenomenal training camp, most notably alongside Nathan Beaulieu, albeit those performances were in the infancy of the pre-season and subsequently against lesser competition.
• The 26-year old recorded seven points, 49 penalty minutes and a minus-eight rating in 38 games with the Canadiens last season.

► Youngest This Season

• Mikhail Sergachev’s performance out of training camp was, evidently, enough to land him a spot in the team’s top-six to start the season, the youngest in the NHL to crack a spot.
• In a tweet sent out by James Mirtle of the Globe And Mail, Sergachev is the younger player in the NHL to start out the 2016-17 season.
• “Youngest player in the NHL on opening day is Canadiens defencemen Mikhail Sergachev. 18.3 years old.” tweeted Mirtle.
• Sergachev will be given his nine game tryout in the NHL and then it will be decided whether to burn a year off his contract, another important date is the 40 game mark where he’ll forgo a year of RFA status should he pass it.

► Kane Out With Cracked Ribs

• Sabres Evander Kane is expected to miss weeks with three cracked ribs after falling into the boards in Thursday’s game against the Canadiens.
• Kane crashed into the boards in a race for the puck with Alexei Emelin in the second period. Kane was helped off the ice and taken to hospital.

► Quick On IR

• Following a quick exodus from the World Cup Of Hockey in embarrassing fashion, Jonathan Quick’s string of negativity continues, with the former Conn Smythe winner landing on the injured reserve on Thursday.
• The American was placed on IR by the Kings following suffering a lower-body injury in the team’s first game of the season against the San Jose Sharks on Wednesday night.
• According to the Kings’ official website, the man once known as the playoffs’ best netminder is considered to week-to-week following leaving the aforementioned game in the first period.
• Quick posted a 2.22 goals against average last season with a .918 save percentage, a career-high 40 wins and five shutouts in 68 games last season with Los Angeles who made their return to playoff hockey following a one year absence.

► Keon Ranked the Best Leaf

• The Toronto Maple Leafs’ way of commemorating their legends of past years is Legends Row just outside of the Air Canada Centre, a place that will have three more inductees for this season.
• Dave Keon, Tim Horton, and Turk Broda are the three former Maple Leafs that had their statutes created and added to to Legends Row with last night being the ceremony.
• Horton played 18 of his 23 seasons in he NHL with the Maple Leafs, Broda played all 16 of his seasons in the NHL with Toronto and won a pair of Vezina trophies and Keon won a quartet of Stanley Cups for he team that hasn’t won one since 1967.

► Laine Gets Two Points

• Auston Matthews had the greatest performance in a first NHL game in the history of first overall picks, but the second overall pick, Patrik Laine, isn’t looking to equal or surpass that incredible feat.
• According to Gary Lawless of TSN, Laine wasn’t having any of the proposed performance he could have in the face of Matthews’ record-setting NHL debut.
• Patrik Laine reacted when I asked if he had to score five to best Auston Matthews: “No, I need two points. Two for the win.”‘. tweeted Lawless just prior to Laine’s NHL debut.
• Laine lined up alongside Matthew Perreault and fellow rookie standout Kyle Connor, with Laine having to play on his strong side, not his usual position.
• Laine had a power-play goal and helped set up the game winner as the Jets earned an overtime win.
• “It’s amazing to score the goal in front of the home crowd — it’s unbelievable,” Laine said. “I’ve never been part of anything like that.”
