► Habs training camp

  • The Montreal Canadiens held a practice Wednesday morning at the Bell Sports Complex in Brossard to prepare for their exhibition game against the Ottawa Senators at the Bell Centre on Thursday night.
  • The major news this morning is that Max Pacioretty will play on Thursday against the Senators. Coach Michel Therrien confirmed that Pacioretty will take his place next to Tomas Plekanec and Brendan Gallagher on Thursday night.
  • Pacioretty has been cleared for contact but admits his leg was a little stiff in practice. If he does play, Pacioretty will wear a brace to protect his knee/tibia.
  • Pacioretty said, “If everything goes well, I could get into the game [on Thursday.]” On wearing the ‘C’ for the first time, Pacioretty said, “It’s gonna be a special time for me [even though it’s preseason].”
  • TSN’s John Lu reported that “Pacioretty spent [Tuesday’s] team day off at the dentist getting a double root canal finished that was started two years ago.”
  • Canadiens 2015 first round draft pick Noah Juulsen will also play on Thursday night getting his very action of the pre-season. Juulsen has been sidelined with concussion symptoms.
  • Carey Price will play the full game on Thursday with Dustin Tokarski getting the start on Saturday. Mike Condon will serve as the backup.
  • The Canadiens won their most recent pre-season game against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday night by a score of 4-1. You can read our game report here: Recap – Penguins vs Canadiens: Habs Starters Cruise to Preseason Win

► Scherbak to St. John’s

  • The Canadiens have sent down forward Nikita Scherbak following the team’s 4-1 win against the Pittsburgh  Penguins on Monday night.
  • The game against the Penguins was Scherbak’s one and only game in this year’s pre season; he missed the majority of the games due to an ankle injury. He played with Charles Hudon and Brian Flynn who are both still in camp.
  • This move trims the roster down to 30, the NHL maximum is 24.
  • This season will be the Russian’s first professional season and, barring an injury or him performing very well, he will most likely spend most of the year in the AHL.
  • In 65 games with the Everett Silvertips last season, the 19-year old had 27 goals and 82 points to follow up a similar season  in Saskatoon where he had 28 goals and 78 points in 65 games. The only deviation between the two campaigns is Everett plays a much more two-way system then the Blades.

► The odds are in

  • Bovada, which is a sports betting site, released their odds for this upcoming season and the Habs you might expect made their respective top 10’s.
  • As many would’ve expected, Carey Price was atop the site’s list with 7/2 odds of winning his second consecutive Vezina Trophy. Henrik Lundqvist came in second at 9/2. For the Hart Trophy Price came in at 10/1, in 4th place behind Crosby, Ovechkin and Tavares.
  • P.K. Subban had the third best odds to win his second Norris Trophy with 9/2 odds, only trailing Erik Karlsson (4/1) and Drew Doughty (7/2).
  • Canadiens captain Max Pacioretty was tied for 5th best odds with Sidney Crosby and Vladimir Tarasenko at 16/1 to win the Rocket Richard trophy. Atop the odds were Steven Stamkos and Alex Ovechkin who were both at 5/2.

► Miceli gets a contract

  • The St. John’s Ice Caps and forward Anthony Miceli have reached an agreement that will keep the 5-foot-9-inch forward on the rock for this season. The two-way deal is the first of his career as he went undrafted for four years before reaching this agreement.
  • The Montreal native was invited to Habs rookie camp and subsequently to the big camp. He played well in the rookie tournament notching four assists in the Canadiens’ three games.
  • In four full seasons in the QMJHL with Victoriaville, he scored over 30 goals in every season. His highest total came last season when he scored 38 goals and supplemented that with 58 assists.
  • The Italian-Canadian scorer will have to compete for a roster spot with a loaded forward core who has the likes of Nikita Scherbak, Daniel Carr, Michael McCarron and others.

► Semin scores his first

  • On Monday night the Habs and Penguins squared off at the Centre Videotron, the first goal of that game was originally believed to be Alex Galchenyuk’s but as it turns out Alex Semin had just scored his first goal in a Canadiens uniform.
  • This wasn’t and won’t be the nicest goal Alexander Semin wil scored but it was nevertheless his first.

► Another scrap in practice

  • Following P.K. Subban and Brendan Gallagher got into a tussle last week Carey Price got into the mix by squaring off with the aforementioned Subban.

► Team India reveals their jerseys

  • The Canadiens’ ECHL affiliate the Brampton Beast will be playing Team India on October 8th in Brampton and Team India released the jersey they will be wearing for this game.
  • Head coach Adam Sherlip is very excited about the jerseys saying, “First of all, they’re going to be worn for the first time ever in Team India’s first-ever match in North America.  Secondly, the design itself is unique as it incorporates the dark blue of the Ashoka Chakra in the middle of India’s flag as a primary jersey color, similar to India’s cricket and field hockey teams.”
  • The jerseys will also be on sale at the arena just in case you want to pick one up.

► The Leafs sign Boyes

  • The Toronto Maple Leafs have signs training camp invitee Brad Boyes to a one year, one-way contract worth $700,000.
  • Boyes, who was the only one amongst the three players the Leafs invited to training camp to get a contract with the team. Both Devin Setoguchi and Curtis Glencross became free agents.
  • Boyes was originally drafted by the Leafs, 24th overall, back in 2000 but never played a game with the team as he was dealt to the San Jose Sharks.
  • Last season, Boyes had 14 goals and 38 points in 74 games but the Panthers still bought out the remaining year of his contract that paid him $1.5 million.
  • In his 762 career NHL games he’s scored 203 goals and has 481 points.
