► Pacioretty is top-5

  • Last week EA Sports revealed that Carey Price is the top goaltender in their soon-to-be-released NHL 16. On defense, P.K. Subban placed sixth with Shea Weber taking the top spot. The Canadiens did not have a right-winger in the top-10.
  • On Tuesday EA Sports revealed that Habs forward Max Pacioretty was ranked as the fifth best left-winger in the game.
  • Alex Ovechkin (93), Jamie Benn (92), Taylor Hall (90) and Zach Parise (90) made up the top-4 left-wingers.

► Rookie showcase

  • 39 players were in Toronto to participate in the NHLPA Rookie Showcase.  Representing the Canadiens were a couple of 2013 draft picks, first-rounder Mike McCarron and Zach Fucale chosen in the second round by the Habs.
  • The Canadiens Rookie Camp gets underway on September 10. On Tuesday, the Habs announced the 26-player roster.

► Oh so sweet

  • The wife of Canadiens goalie Carey Price, Angela Price, posted a picture of the two of them celebrating their second wedding anniversary by eating some cotton candy. The traditional wedding gift for a second wedding anniversary is cotton.

► Tinner’s perfect player

  • Jarred Tinordi was asked to participate in the Canadiens.com regular feature The Ultimate Player.
  • For hands he chose Jordan Eberle: “He’s pretty quick” was Tinordi’s explanation. He chose Zdeno Chara for strength and said “He’s the biggest and strongest guy. He’s a machine. He moves people around like its nothing.”
  • Tinordi admires the vision of Sidney Crosby who he said is “The best player in the world.” According to the 6-foot-6-inch defenceman, “The guy sees things I don’t even see when I’m watching TV.”
  • In his opinion the player with the most heart is Brandon Prust. “He’s a warrior. He’s fighting guys that are bigger than him. He’s blocking shots, he’s doing everything. The guy plays hard.”
  • For shot, Tinordi says “[Shea Weber] has a cannon, it’s accurate too.”
  • From his own team, Michaël Bournival’s speed is most impressive to the hulking defenceman “He’s just fast, it’s tough to keep up with him.”

► Off to Sweden

  • Former Canadiens forward Max Lapierre signed a one-year deal with Modo of the Swedish Elite League.
  • The Canadiens’ former 61st overall pick spent the first part of last season with the St. Louis Blues and finished off the season with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He had two goals and 11 points between the two teams along with sporting a minus-15 rating.
  • The St-Leonard, Quebec native was originally drafted by the Canadiens back in 2003 and subsequently spent nine years in the organization before getting dealt to the Anaheim Ducks in 2010-11. Lapierre was sent to California in exchange for Brett Festerling and a fifth round pick in the 2012 draft that ended up being Charles Hudon.
  • In the five years he played for the Canadiens he recorded 40 goals and 80 points in 293 games and is regarded by some as the Canadiens’ best agitator of the 2000’s.
  • Over 614 NHL games, Lapierre has scored 65 goals and added 74 points with 586 penalty minutes. In 80 career playoff games he has seven goals and 15 points accompanied by 144 penalty minutes.

► Scouts added

  • ISS Hockey is a renowned international scouting service for the NHL.  Recently they announced the hiring of three scouts with ties to the Montreal Canadiens.
  • Les Kuntar has been hired as a U.S. Regional Scout.  A goaltender, Kuntar was a sixth round draft choice of the Montreal Canadiens in 1987.
  • Brian Smolinski was also hired as a regional scout for the U.S. Smolinski signed with the Canadiens in 2007 as a free agent. He played one season scoring eight goals and 17 assists.
  • Jose Charnonneau was hired as a U.S. Regional Scout. Charbonneau was drafted 12th overall by the Canadiens in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft but never was able to live up to expectations.

► Happy as a Sabre

  • Apron Basu of LNH.com interviewed Jack Eichel and they spoke about training camp and Connor McDavid.
  • The second overall pick on him putting on more weight: “I put on a little bit of weight, about 10 pounds of weight, and kept the body fat down. I did a lot of lifting, a lot of training. I actually trained with Noah [Hanifin]. Every day, me and Noah. There’s a big group of us though down in Foxborough, Mass. Our trainer’s name is Brian McDonagh.”
  • He also spoke about how well he is treated as a member of the Sabres organization: “I get body work, deep tissue body work a few times a week from a lady that I’ve been seeing all summer and in the spring last year. I’m really familiar with her and she’s really familiar with me. So the Sabres flew their massage therapist out to Boston and paid him to meet with her. I think that says something about their organization.”
  • “I try not to put any thought into it. I try not to put any thought into comparisons between me and Connor. It’s going to be there, it’s always going to be there. But the fact is now that the draft’s over and all that’s done with, I wish him the best in Edmonton and I’m just going to try and focus on myself and do what I can to help the Buffalo Sabres.” noted the North Chelmsford native.

► Whitney back in hockey

  • The Carolina Hurricanes brought back a long time member of their organization this week. Ray Whitney will be re-joining the Hurricanes as a professional scout.
  • Whitney retired from the NHL in January following a 21-year NHL career. The Fort Saskatchewan native played five years in the ‘Canes organization and won a Stanley Cup with the team in 2006. In 372 games in Raleigh he scored 119 goals and recorded 334 points.
  • Over the 21 seasons he’s played in the NHL he had 385 goals and 1064 points in 1330 games with the Sharks, Oilers, Panthers, Blue Jackets, Red Wings, Coyotes, Stars and the aforementioned Hurricanes.
  • In 108 playoff games the former 23rd overall pick in the 1991 NHL draft scored 21 goals and added 32 assists and won a Stanley Cup.

► Prepared to go home?

  • Milan Lucic was recently on TSN 1040 Vancouver and spoke about the Kings’ chances to be a contender and the possibility of him heading home when his contract to up.
  • “I don’t know, I obviously don’t know what’s going to happen moving on, I have one year left on my contract and there’s a possibility that I can hit the UFA market. It’s obviously been a dream of mine since I was a kid just to play in your hometown and play for the Canucks but right now the main focus is going down to LA,” Lucic said on the possibility of him going home.
  • The former Bruin on the chances for his current team to take a run at the Cup: “If you look at the roster we are still a really deep team and we have another chance to make a cup run.”
  • On if he has spoken to head coach Darryl Sutter: “I talked to him once on the phone, it was a couple days after I got traded, when we talked you know he was obviously very excited, he loves the western boys my style of play kind of is like his style of play.”
  • On going back to Boston in a Kings uniform: “I don’t know I’ve actually thought about it a lot so I think it’s going to be an emotional night but I think the first 5-10 minutes of the game are going to be pretty weird and emotional but I think on pace you can get through that part you can get to focusing on the game and doing your job on the ice.”
  • On who he would take out on the Bruins: “You know, I’m good buddies with Tuuka (Rask) so I’d love to get one past him, just because we’re good buddies I’d love to get one past him and rub it into him. Or maybe run through him like I did to another goalie.”

► Kadri exited for a clean slate

  • Nazem Kadri’s career has been filled with peaks and valleys but he’s ready for a fresh start with a new coach.
  • “I’ve had contract years before and I know how to handle myself during the season and coming out of this offseason I don think I’ve felt better. The confidence is there knowing you put in the work, you put in the extra time to get ready for this moment,” Kadri said during his media scrum.
  • “There’s been up and down you know that’s how it is and obviously in Toronto a lot of speculation, a lot of scrutiny comes along with that and sometimes it’s hard for young players but as time goes on you start to mature.”
  • The former London Knight on his new coach Mike Babcock: “I’ve spoke to him on the phone and in person too, it’s super positive and […{ there’s no grey area, you know what he expects, he knows what you expect from yourself and really everything is history.”
  • “[Babcock] has been great so far and with his guidance hopefully we can come to turn around. He’s a guy that believes in me and that’s motivating in itself.”
