► Price sets sights on Cup

  • As we reported in Monday’s edition of Headlines, Carey Price took part in Eli Wilson’s goaltending school providing a unique experience for 10 young goalies from across North America.
  • While there Price was interviewed by Kevin Woodley from NHL.com. Price had this to say about the camp, “This brings me back to my hockey school days. It kind of brings you back to where you started and kind of puts things in perspective in terms of where you are at now.”
  • On his motivation for the upcoming season, Price said, “Winning the Stanley Cup is my priority and I haven’t done that yet, so that’s what keeps me driven.”

► Kolzig mentors Price

  • With the NHL experiencing a lockout during the 2004-05 season, Washington Capitals goalie Olie Kolzig had time on his hands. The beneficiary was Carey Price as Kolzig returned to his former junior team to lend a hand. Price was in his first season as the starter for the Tri-City Americans playing 63 games.
  • The Americans posted a video of Kolzig earlier this month talking about a 17-year-old Price.

► Mitchell thinks Canadiens have great locker room

  • Stu Cowan interviewed Canadiens forward Torrey Mitchell who had this to say about re-signing with the Canadiens, “They said they wanted to re-sign me when I had my year-end meeting. Bergevin followed up on it. He called a few weeks later and said he was going to stand by his word. He wasn’t messing around, he told me he wanted me back. I didn’t really feel the need to talk to my agent about other teams.”
  • On how the fans in Montreal drive him: “There’s always pressure to win wherever you are, obviously, win, keep your job, perform. So that didn’t feel any different. But being from Montreal and knowing how it is here and how passionate the fans are — how important the team is to the city — you feel that weight a little bit more than San Jose, Minnesota, Buffalo, the teams that I’ve been with, that’s for sure. It feels like there’s a little more weight from the community just being behind the team because of how much passion they have.”
  • On the Canadiens’ locker room: “The core guys are not early 20s, but they’re kind of in their mid-20s, they’re still young, lot of energy, it’s a little bit unique in Montreal because the guys are in their prime, they’re 24, 25 years old, so it seems like there’s a lot of good energy, a lot of good banter I guess, if you will. It was a really good locker room.”
  • “It was an unbelievable experience the 3½ months that I played here and hopefully I can just keep it going next year.”

► Semin a father

  • Congratulations to Canadiens forward Alex Semin and his wife Alena on the birth of their son Alexander. Alexander Jr. was born at 4 PM on August 19th. Semin is the third Canadiens forward along with Jeff Petry and Charles Hudon to have a child this summer.

► Brotherly advice

  • Boston Bruins prospect Malcolm Subban was on the Jeff Blair show on Sportsnet 590 the Fan and spoke a little bit about his focus and advice he got from his brother P.K.
  • The middle Subban on how important this year is for him and : “To be honest, I always do better when I focus on myself and my play and what I can control coming into camp and that’s what I do every year regardless who else is at camp and play my game and do my part and hopefully management recognizes that gives me an opportunity based on that.”
  • On advice P.K. has given him and if he helps him focus: “Oh for sure he always tries to instil that in me, I mean you look at a player like him he’s the best person you could probably take that advice from. He’s always told me to focus on what I can control.”

Homage to a strong person

  • Ottawa Senators goalie Andrew Hammond paid homage to the brave Senators fan Jonathan Pitre by putting his initials and a butterfly on the back plate of his helmet.
  • Jonathan suffers from Epidermolysis bullosa. Children who suffer from this disease are referred to as butterfly children.

Players speak out

  • When Adidas bought the rights to produce NHL jerseys it lead people to believe that advertisement on NHL jerseys is inevitable. Some NHLers like Blake Wheeler spoke out against putting ads on jerseys while others were neutral to the thought.

  • That tweet now has almost 7,900 retweets and almost the same amount of favourites.
  • Philadelphia Flyers defenceman Michael Del Zotto wasn’t really for or against the idea: “During the lockout I played over in Switzerland so I kinda got a feel for it, it wasn’t a huge deal.”
  • Noted business man Michael Cammalleri looked at both sides of the spectrum but didn’t really take a stance on the matter: “You’d have to look at the financials of it and see what type of revenue might be drawn from it. There’s something to be said for the logo and hockey and the way it’s been and the history of that and representing the logo on the front of the chest.”
  • It isn’t a sure fire thing that Adidas and the NHL will allow advertising on jersey but considering that Adidas paid a reported $35 million for these rights you can expect them to make their money back somehow aside from jersey sales.

Ovy going to the Olympics no matter what

  • Last year Alexander Ovechkin said he would play in the Olympics not matter if the NHL went or not. Fast forward a year the Russian forward is echoing the same sentiments towards the 2018 games.
  • “The same situation was with the Sochi Games, they said NHL could not be allowed to come. I hope the sides will reach an agreement. Anyway, I and other players will definitely come.” said Ovechkin
  • Ovechkin has always worn his country’s jersey with pride throughout Olympic events but will the six time 50-goal scorer don the Russian jersey in the World Cup of hockey, which is a potential deterrent when it comes to NHL players in the Olympics. Even though Ovechkin will go against the NHL should they not go to the Olympics his dedication to his country is admirable.

Boedker willing to stay long term

  • Mikkel Boedker’s tenure with the Arizona Coyotes franchise has been a rocky one to say the least. The Coyotes and the Danish forward settled to a 1-year contract earlier this year despite talks of a long term deal. Now the sniper feels it’s the Coyotes turn to show they want him.
  • “I’m up for anything, it obviously puts a lot of pressure on me this season but I think it’s their turn to show what I mean to the team [in the form of a contract extension].”
  • The reason the two sides haven’t been able to come to terms on a long-term agreement is partially due to Boedker’s inconsistency, and partly due to him not wanting a deal because of the uncertainty surrounding the franchise.
  • The former eighth overall pick broke into the NHL in 2008-09 and had 11 goals and 17 assists in 79 games with the ‘Yotes. He had 29 goals the previous season in the OHL. After repeated mediocre seasons in which people labeled him as a bust he had his breakout year in 2013-14. He recorded 19 goals and 51 points in all 82 games while sporting a minus 9 rating on a horrifically bad Coyotes team.
  • Was on pace to have his best career season last season but he missed 37 games after having his spleen removed and consequently lost 20 pounds that he had to regain. He had 14 goals and 28 points that season, he was on pace for a 25 goal and 51 point season.

Sid goes between the pipes

  • Penguins forward Sidney Crosby strapped on the pads and played a game with the team’s office staff and didn’t look out of place by any means.
  • Needless to say that Penguins staffers were excited for the opportunity: “It’s one of those stories you can tell your kids and grandkids years down the road, saying: ‘Hey, I laced them up with Sidney Crosby once.”
