► IceCaps unveil a classic

  • Traditional. Elegant. Classic. Those are the words used by the official Twitter account of the St. John’s IceCaps to introduce their new jerseys on Wednesday morning. Except for the IceCaps logo and shoulder flashes, the jerseys are almost identical to the ones worn by the Montreal Canadiens.
  • IceCaps head coach Sylvain Lefebvre  and president Danny Williams were on hand at Jack Byrne Arena to unveil the new jerseys.
  • Danny Williams said, “Good strong Canadiens fans, they want to see the red, white and blue. But we also wanted to keep St. John’s and Newfoundland and Labrador in it, and that’s why we kept the same logo with the iceberg on top.”
  • About this year’s roster, Lefebvre (borrowing some Therrien-speak) said, “We feel very good about the level of talent and the compete level that we’re going to put forward here on the ice in St. John’s.”
  • Members of the Canadiens alumni, in Newfoundland for a hockey school, also participated in the ceremony. They included Richard Sévigny, Sergio Momesso, Gilbert Delorme and Gaston Gingras.

  • As mentioned above, the Canadiens alumni are in St. John’s, Newfoundland this week to operate a hockey school. Sergio Momesso, speaking to CBC, said “We’re all going to be there for a week and I’ve done a lot of hockey schools over my career since I’ve been done playing.”
  • The alumni hockey school is part of the new ties between St. John’s and the Montreal Canadiens organization.

Cunneyworth takes over Americans

  • On Tuesday, Buffalo GM Tim Murray named Randy Cunneyworth as head coach of the Rochester Americans, the AHL affiliate of the Sabres. Cunneyworth is well known for his ability to develop young talent was the Sabres player development coach.
  • On the hiring Murray said, “We are happy to have Randy Cunneyworth move into the role of head coach of the Rochester Americans. Randy has already established himself as a valuable member of our hockey department in his previous role as development coach, and his track record for winning in the AHL and developing young players make him the ideal candidate to lead the Amerks.”
  • Cunneyworth had a very successful year in 2010-11 taking the Hamilton Bulldogs to the Western conference finals after a 44-27-2-7 regular season record with the Canadiens farm team.
  • The following year Cunneyworth was named as an assistant to Canadiens head coach Jacques Martin. When Martin was fired in December 2011, Cunneyworth was appointed as interim head coach.  Folding to pressure from a small number of ultra-nationals, owner Geoff Molson and GM Pierre Gauthier took the unprecedented step of apologizing for the appointment of an Anglophone to the role. With his authority undercut, the Canadiens took a nosedive to the bottom of the standings finishing 15th in the Eastern conference.
