On this day in hockey history…1923 — The Montreal Canadiens sign Howie Morenz.

1933 — At the NHL Board of Governors meeting it was decided that two referees would henceforth be used for each game, instead of one referee and one linesman. This system lasted five years, before it went back to one ref and one linseman.

► Welcome to Laval

  • Matt Taormina cleared waivers and has reported to the Laval Rocket training camp. Taormina signed a two-year, two-way contract with Montreal on July 1st after spending two seasons in the Tampa Bay Lightning organization.  He had 15 goals and 60 points in 75 games with AHL Syracuse last year.
  • Chris Terry cleared waivers on Friday and will also join the Rocket camp. Terry signed his second one year-two way deal after leading the Ice Caps with 30 goals and 68 points in 58 games

► Come back Scherby!

  • Days after being cut from the Habs main camp, Nikita Scherbak has been recalled from Laval.

► Injury replacement

  • With the injury to Charlie Lindgren, Zach Fucale earned a recall from Laval days after being cut from the main camp.  Fucale will back up Lindgren against the Panthers on Friday night.
  • The advantages of having the AHL club just a metro ride away from the NHL club make moves like this more common.

► They took it out

  • Erik Karlsson revealed to TSN’s Ian Mendez his ankle is improving, but surprisingly had to have a portion of bone removed.
  • Karlsson said, “It’s hard to truly say exactly what is different. It feels like I have a leather piece in my one ankle and you can’t really move it. It’s going to take some getting used to, but again, I think I can manage this pretty well right now.”
  • And then Karlsson revealed the surprising part, “They took half of my ankle bone out and the part that is still there should be as normal possible.”

► Cournoyer on the series that changed hockey

  • Canadiens legend Yvan Cournoyer recently spoke about the Canada – Russia Summit Series.
  • According to Cournoyer, the historic 1972 series was one of two events that transformed his career. The second was the Canadiens losing the 1967 Stanley Cup Final to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
  • Cournoyer said, “Against the Soviets, before Game 1 in Montreal, just before we left for the Forum, I told Frank Mahovlich, ‘I’m worried. I don’t know the Russians. I’ve never played against them. I don’t know how they play. I’m going to war and I don’t even know my enemy.'”

► Q & A with the Habs captain

  • ESPN recently sat down with Canadiens captain Max Pacioretty for a question and answer period on a wide range of topics.
  • On the difference between Claude Julien and Michel Therrien, Pacioretty said, “I think [Julien] wants to concentrate on being a little bit more offensive and trying to hit the blue line with speed, rather than being flat-footed on a zone entry. So that’s what we’ve harped on the most, and that’s what’s hit home the most with me [as something] that I can incorporate into my game.”
  • On the Canadiens veteran who influenced him most, Pacioretty said, “Saku (Koivu). I talked a lot to Saku, and I’m not sure if he even remembers all the talks that we had. But a couple of them really stood out and hit home. We went out to dinner one time and had a really good talk about stuff I’ll always keep private. Saku’s a guy who had a really good grip on things and understood what was important, [how] to be a Montreal Canadien and be a good player, whether it was technical stuff on the ice or personal stuff off the ice.”

► NCAA Top 30 includes Habs prospect

  • Montreal’s 2017 seventh round pick Cayden Primeau who will suit up for Northeastern University is ranked 10th overall in the ISS TOP 30 NCAA freshmen list. He was the top ranked goaltender on this list as well.

► Practice like you mean it

  • With the Canadiens still in search of a preseason win, coach Claude Julien has put the team through it paces in practice, demanding more up tempo play and intensity.
  • Brendan Gallagher reacted to the change, “That’s what we need. It doesn’t matter when it is. We’re still trying to win hockey games here, and we haven’t been getting the results we want and a big part of that is our battle level, our compete level, and we have to be better. It was a good practice. Everyone showed up. Everyone battled. It’s the only way we’re going to get better around here. Today was a good work day… A good practice day like this is a step in the right direction.”

► McGuire’s takes

  • In a recent interview with TSN, Maple Leafs General Manager Lou Lamoriello said, “We sometimes in this era we have to make decisions too premature because the demands are real and the leverage is on the player’s side.”
  • In reaction, Pierre McGuire responded, “Now you know why they want a 20-year-old draft.”
  • In other matters, McGuire said, “If I’m Geoff Molson I’m hard as heck getting after John Tavares.“
  • Yes, Pierre.
Captain Obvious

► Habs GM is a natural on RDS couch

  • Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin appeared on RDS’ L’Antichambre. When asked who surprised him at training camp, Bergevin talked about the line of Tomas Plekanec, Charles Hudon and Artturi Lehkonen.
  • Bergevin said that Hudon has done very well, Plekanec has stepped up after a difficult season and with Lehkonen, they are all working well together.

  • When pressed on the youth at camp and their performances, Bergevin could not hide his disapointment. He said that there are players who have missed their opportunities.  He told the young players there were positions available to be won.  Some were able to enter the picture while others were not.

  • Marc Bergevin also touched on the salary cap and his reasoning behind why there is $8.4M in space available to the Canadiens at the start of the season.
  • Bergevin explained that he tried to sign Alexander Radulov and Andrei Markov. Now there are no players available to spend that money on.  He said that he was ready to spend, but the fit wasn’t there.
