All Habs Headlines: Friday December 8, 2017
On this day in hockey history…

1984— Scotty Bowman led the Buffalo Sabres to a 3-1 win at Boston to give him 690 career victories, making him tied for first all time with Dick Irvin.

1987— In a 5-2 Flyers win over the Bruins, Ron Hextall became the first goalie to shoot and score into an empty net! It was actually the second goal scored by a goalie, Billy Smith was credited with the first goalie goal eight years earlier.

  • Jonathan Drouin returned to practice after being out of the lineup with a lower-body injury followed by the flu.
  • Shea Weber took a maintenance day.
  • Nikita Scherbak is recovering following knee surgery.
  • Ales Hemsky has concussion symptoms.
  • Al Montoya has concussion symptoms. Montoya skated on his own with athletic therapist, Graham Rynbend.
  • Artturi Lehkonen is out indefinitely with a lower-body injury. Lehkonen skated on his own for the third straight day.

► Chelios collecting Hall of Fame rings

  • Chris Chelios has been named to IIHF Hall Of Fame.
  • Chelios is one of only two male players to represent the United States at four Olympic Winter Games (1984, 1988, 2002, 2006), he also participated in three Canada Cups (1984, 1987, 1991), and two World Cups of Hockey (1996, 2004).

► Waived goodbye

  • The Canadiens designated Brandon Davidson expendable, making a roster position available for the return of Shea Weber.
  • Davidson was waived once Marc Bergevin was unable to make a deal after advising all NHL teams that the 26-year-old defenseman was available on the trade block.
  • Edmonton claimed Davidson due to their needs on the blueline and their familiarity with the former Oiler.

► Returned to sender and back again

  • Daniel Carr was called up while Jonathan Drouin was out with a minor injury.
  • He was then returned on a paper transaction to save on days before waiver exemption is lost.
  • His stat line looks like he will remain. Averaging approximately 11 minutes of icetime in his four games this season Carr has two goals and six points.

► And the bronze medal goes to..

  • RDS reports that Habs are officially the third most valuable franchise in the NHL, behind the New York Rangers and Toronto Maple Leafs.

Canadiens values

  • The Canadiens continue their tradition of community outreach proving themselves to be responsible community leaders.

► ‘Man of Mystery’ part two

  • After much speculation, it was announced Jonathan Drouin would not dress versus Calgary.
  • While the Canadiens state that his Lower Body Injury has healed, they now say he has the flu.

► Seattle given a ‘go’

  • NHL commissioner announced that an ownership group in Seattle has been given the go ahead to file an application for an NHL expansion franchise.
  • The 32nd team in the NHL could begin play in the 2020-21 season.
  • Hollywood producer Jerry Bruckheimer is part of the Seattle ownership group.
  • Bettman also announced that the expansion fee would be $650 million.

► Hurricanes staying put

  • Dallas-based billionaire, Tom Dundon, has entered into an agreement with the NHL to purchase the majority share of the Carolina Hurricanes.
  • Gary Bettman stated emphatically that the Hurricanes will not be moved from Raleigh.
  • Current owner, Peter Karmanos Jr. will retain a minority share of the franchise.

► Quebec snubbed?

  • When the NHL awarded an expansion franchise to Las Vegas, a decision on a potential team in Quebec City was deferred. Well, apparently that decision has been deferred again.
  • When announcing that the league would accept an application from Seattle, Gary Bettman said that it was the only city being considered. So ‘no’ to Quebec City again.
  • Deputy commissioner Bill Daly stated that the east/west balance must be addressed first. Daly said, “I don’t think today’s events have any impact on Quebec City. If I wanted to be positive, I’d say one of the things we kept harping on is we need another team in the (Western Conference) before we consider expanding in the East.”

► Primeau job

  • Northeastern rookie and Habs 2017 seventh round pick Cayden Primeau was named Hockey East’s rookie of the week.
