Lineup Notes:

  • Habs starting six: Tomas Plekanec, Travis Moen, Brian Gionta, Alexei Emelin, Andrei Markov, Carey Price
  • Scratched: Michael Ryder (lower body), Tomas Kaberle
  • Jarred Tinordi made his NHL debut.
  • New Jersey honoured former goalie coach Jacques Caron with a pre-game ceremony.

What you need to know:

  • The Canadiens scored first for the 21st time in 28 games. Colby Armstrong wristed a rolling puck into the top corner with Mike Blunden providing the screen.

Jarred Tinordi showed some nervousness on the first few shifts but settled down to play a strong game. In his first NHL match, he surprisingly had 14:48 of ice-time, tallied his first NHL point and was plus-2.

  • Carey Price was the best player on the ice registering his league-leading 15th win (tied with Marc-Andre Fleury.) Price faced 18 shots in the third period, 13 of the coming in the final nine minutes as the Devils dominated.
  • It was another strong game for Lars Eller. He led the team with four hits and was effective creating offense with four shots on goal. Eller beat Johan Hedberg in the second period with a one-timer but rang it off the post.
  • Ryan White still isn’t getting the message. He took a holding-the-stick penalty in the offensive zone — while in the box, Jersey scored. White along with Blunden and Gabriel Dumont barely saw the ice in the third period as Michel Therrien shortened the bench to protect the lead.
  • Montreal fell to 19th in the league on the penalty-kill. The diamond scheme being pedalled by the coaching staff is just not working.
  • Habs have won five straight and are 13-1-3 in their last 17 games.

Injury/Roster Report:

  • No new injuries.
  • Alexei Emelin was in obvious discomfort on the bench after blocking a shot. When asked about it post-game, Michel Therrien said, “He should be fine.”
  • Devils Peter Harrold was cut when he was struck by a puck on the forehead in the third period, but was able to return a short time later.

Coach Michel Therrien:

  • “We just want to play the same way at home or on the road. We take a lot of pride to play well on the road.”
  • Price was phenomenal. He was calm, was in good position. He was a true leader for us out there.”
  • “What a start! [Tinordi] was able to put the puck at the net for a good shot and have it redirected by Tomas Plekanec. Tinordi looked mature for his age. I thought he played really solid for his first game. His ice-time was well-deserved. He looked really comfortable. Not nervous, was making the right decisions. He was really effective.”
  • “[Armstrong] is doing lots of good things for our club. Guys on the bench were really excited when he finally scored his goal.”

Carey Price:

  • “[Tinordi] was very poised with the puck, making solid passes. His positional play was great all night.”

Devils coach Pete DeBoer:

  • “When I look at the scoring chances, for every one of those we gave them, they gave us probably three. We just didn’t put them in. That’s the difference.”

Devils forward Ilya Kovalchuk:

  • “I think [Price] is one of the best goalies in the League now. He’s the reason why they’re in first place.”
