Canadiens GM Bob Gainey announced Wednesday the signing of free-agent defenseman Chad Anderson to a one-year, two-way contract (2008-09). As per club policy, financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Anderson, 26, spent the 2007-08 season with the AHL’s Philadelphia Phantoms. In 55 regular-season games, the 6-foot-4, 217-pound blueliner amassed 13 points (two goals, 11 assists), served 35 penalty minutes and finished second on the team with a plus-11 rating.

Habster:

From the few scouting reports I’ve read about Chad Anderson, he is a solid defenseman in his own zone and uses his size really well on down low containment as well as along the boards. He also uses his stick/long reach to poke check the puck away from on rushing forwards. He has a good shot and is an above average skater for a guy 6’4″ 217 lbs. Anderson isn’t an offensively gifted player from the back end but remains a solid defenseman who plays a simple defensive minded game.
