Game Report

Congratulations if you made it the whole way through this game from start to finish. It was an ugly game of hockey.

Each team entered the game with losses in a row. But it was the Canadiens that seemed far more determined throughout the night to keep their losing streak intact.

There are many statistics that could be used to describe this painful game but here’s one that puts things in perspective. The notoriously partisan off-ice officials at the Bell Centre no doubt minimized the carnage, but even by their calculation giveaways were 20-4 for the Canadiens.

The home side was sloppy, careless and disinterested. As a result, the Flyers were gifted numerous, unhindered opportunities.

For a short time, the interim chief advocate of fun was a breath of fresh air to Canadiens players and fans. But lately, it has appeared that there is a really good reason that 31 other teams in the NHL play with systems and structure. Championing chaos may entertain 11-year-olds but in the pro ranks it leads to what we witnessed tonight.

The silver lining is that the Canadiens have a very good chance of finishing the season in one of the bottom two positions in the standings. That bodes well for the 2022 NHL Entry Draft where the Canadiens should find themselves picking in one of the top four spots.

Up Next

Four games remain in this difficult season with two games away and two at the Bell Centre.

The Canadiens will travel to Ottawa to meet the Senators on Saturday night.

Post-game Quotes

Marty St. Louis

  • “We had good times, but not enough. Our execution was not very good. Our recognition of the game was not very good. We were a bit slow to read the game. And when we read the game correctly, our execution wasn’t very good. This led to several turnovers.”

Brendan Gallagher

  • “I know what I did and we stole one. The referees did not see the game well and believed it was impossible to go to review. We were lucky.”

Jeff Petry

  • “No one is happy with the results. We do good things at times even in defeats, but the results are frustrating. I’ve been part of teams that would have given up at this point in the season, but there are still things to work on here and we want to finish the campaign strong.”
