Game Report

The Montreal Canadiens have lost seven of their last ten games with a record of 3-3-4. Earlier in the season, that would have led to players and fans being discouraged. But this edition of the Canadiens is playing an entertaining brand of hockey.

A draining game on Saturday night against the Toronto Maple Leafs followed by travel, yielded a sluggish first period by Montreal. Jack Hughes took advantage of a Sam Montembeault giveaway in the opening frame to put the Devils on the board.

Hughes scored again in the second period on the power-play. The Canadiens had an opportunity to get back into the game with a two-man advantage for almost a minute but Nico Daws robbed Nick Suzuki. Once the power-play expired Josh Anderson scored his 16th of the year to bring the Habs within one.

The Canadiens didn’t generate many quality scoring chances in the third period until Rem Pitlick tied the score with 42 seconds left. For a moment it looked like Mike Hoffman had won the game in overtime but after review it was determined that his shot went off both posts but didn’t cross the goal line.

The Devils skilled players were on display in the shootout with Yegor Sharangovich scoring the game-deciding goal. It was unfortunate that Marty St. Louis didn’t see fit to send out Jesse Ylonen in the shootout. Ylonen, had a strong game with one assist, but only 7:35 of icetime.

The Canadiens struggled at times in the second game of their back-to-back but fought back in this one to earn a point. The silver lining had to be the play of newly-acquired defenceman Justin Barron. He left a good impression on his coach who used him for a shade under 18 minutes in this game, including shifts in overtime.
