Game Preview by Sam Gerber
Last game : MTL 5  BUF 6  OT

Defense was forgotten about in this one, the Canadiens and Sabres went back and forth all game long. Blown coverages, mental mistakes, bad bounces and just forgetting assignments were evident on both sides. The Habs managed to have a one goal lead after the second but early in the third, multiple breakdowns on a single face-off caused the tying goal. The Habs had the game on the stick of one of their best shooters in overtime but it wasn’t meant to be, the puck ended up on Rasmus Ristolainen’s stick who just powered the puck by Carey Price.

Players to watch

  • Max Domi
Domi has quickly become a fan favourite and one of the the Habs best offensive weapons He has already reached the nine goal mark, his total from last year in a full 82 game season. The next step should be for him to take care of discipline issues and play better in his own end.
  • Tomas Tatar
With Max Pacioretty in town, Tatar has gone under the radar even though it is a game that he, no doubt, had circled on the calendar. Tatar could be on a mission to prove Vegas made a mistake trading him away.
  • Antti Niemi
Niemi gets the start tonight, giving Price a night off. Niemi has struggled since the pre-season but has looked good in shootouts. His team has also bailed him out this season giving Niemi three wins. Looking forward to seeing Niemi put together a solid performance tonight.

Keys to Victory

  • Be better defensively
In the last six games the Habs have let in, on average, more than four goals per game. As a result, Montreal have won just two of the last six. For a team that isn’t highly offensive the Canadiens must play much better defensively.
  • Use your speed
Slowing it down is what the Habs failed to do last game. When a game is going back and forth and the defense is no where to be found, slowing it down can change the entire momentum of the game.
  • Stay out of the box
With the return of the Habs former captain to the Bell Centre, emotions will be high. The Habs have to keep their composure, including Tatar who will have something to prove in this game.

What to Expect by Sam Gerber
This game is going to be one to remember. With a season to forget last year the Canadiens moved on from their Captain, Max Pacioretty. This is his home-coming. Habs fans know that Pacioretty is an elite scorer and is very streaky. Once he starts, he’s hard to stop, the Habs have to be careful to keep him in check but focus on the game. The game is more important than a single player, and Montreal needs a win. With only four wins in their last 10 and currently on a two-game losing streak, the Habs need to flip the page and start getting some wins.
