Game Preview by Sam Gerber |
Last game : MTL 5 VGK 4
Antti Niemi and the Habs had a terrible to start to this one and found themselves down two goals early. The Canadiens took advantage of a turnover to start their comeback, scoring three quick goals in the second. Montreal had the momentum gave up a late one to go into the third tied. An early power-play goal had the Golden Knights up again but the Habs found a way to come back once again bailing out their goaltender. Andrew Shaw got his second goal of the game and, shortly after, Tomas Tatar scored the game winner against his former team.

Players to watch
- Max Domi
Domi had another solid offensive effort and continues to be the offensive leader for the Habs. We look for Domi to improve defensively and clean up his bad penalties to take the next step to a more complete game.
- David Schlemko
Schlemko is healthy once again and brings some stability to the Habs defense. Given the weak state of the Habs defence his decent first game back looked relatively good by comparison.
- Andrew Shaw
Due to injuries, Shaw has moved up to play with Jonathan Drouin and Max Domi. Shaw has returned to going to the net hard and creating space for his line mates. If he’s open, he’s playing with two high-end players that will find him.
Keys to Victory
- Go to the net
All five goals the Habs scored last game were from right in front of the net. The Canadiens have to continue to be willing to go to the dirty areas. It is the best way to create scoring chances.
- Compete harder
After an exciting and emotional night for the Habs at home, they must keep competing on the road. The season only gets harder from here and this should be a winnable game for them
- Contain the superstar
Montreal has to contain Connor McDavid. He will get his chances but it’s important he doesn’t single handled beat the Habs.

What to Expect by Sam Gerber |
The first game on a Western road trip can always be a little rough but the Habs can’t be caught sleeping. The Habs have to come out strong. In my opinion, the Oilers are a one trick pony, and that would be Connor McDavid. Keep in mind, the Oilers are still a Western team and they will bring the physicality, the Habs have to be ready. The Canadiens may not punish teams but if they are consistent they could prevail in the late stages of the game. If the Habs were to pick a game to work on the power-play this would be the one as the Oilers penalty-kill is bottom five in the league. |
