Game Report

The oddsmakers were not kind to the Canadiens coming into this game. Facing the Avalanche, winners of 14 straight games at home, Montreal was listed as an enormous underdog, the steepest odds for the Habs all season.

And in the first period, it looked like this game was going to be a blowout. The Canadiens were outshot 23-12 in the first period. But the visitors were only down 1-0 and that had to be considered a moral victory.

It was also a good period for Cayden Primeau who withstood the opening salvo after a shaky start in Arizona. As the game moved along, Primeau’s confidence grew and his teammates picked up their offensive game. Nick Suzuki and Artturi Lehkonen each had a goal and were in the middle of the Canadiens best chances.

Despite being outshot handily, it was the Habs who had more high-danger chances with a 9-7 advantage (5vs5) during this game. To their credit, the Canadiens did a very good job protecting their young goaltender by giving up a large volume of perimeter shots rather than quality scoring opportunities.

Despite getting to an extra frame, Montreal could not add the second point. At 0-for-7, the Canadiens are winless in overtime this season. It is a part of the game that continues to mystify the Habs head coach. Dominique has a record of 3-13 in overtime as a head coach in the NHL.
