Game Report

It was a difficult first period for the Canadiens as Auston Matthews lit up two goaltenders for his 57th and 58th goals of the season in a span of 27 seconds. Jake Allen suffered an injury after the first Matthews goal and Sam Montembeault gave up the next on the first shot he faced as a replacement.

But many of the Canadiens were present on Friday night at Rogers Centre witnessing a historic comeback by the Toronto Blue Jays. Could the Habs replicate the feat at Scotiabank Centre on Saturday night?

Shot attempts were 27-8 for the Maple Leafs in the first period. The Canadiens were able to recover enough in the middle frame to score twice with goals from Joel Edmundson and Cole Caufield. John Tavares replied for the Leafs.

For Caufield, it was the fourth consecutive game that he scored a goal. He now has 18 goals on the season, just one back of the team lead, currently held by Nick Suzuki.

The Canadiens did some excellent work on the penalty-kill keeping the mighty Leafs power-play at bay. However Montreal was 0-for-4 when they had the man advantage continuing their season-long struggles. Surely management will be looking to make an upgrade on Alex Burrows in the off-season.

The Canadiens returned to Montreal and will enjoy a day off on Sunday. Then they will host the Winnipeg Jets at the Bell Centre on Monday night.
