Game Report

In the press conference to introduce his new head coach, Marc Bergevin was like we had never seen him before: unnerved, frustrated, fidgety and irritable. The Canadiens general manager bet large on this season and his team is not delivering.

By making a splash with his off-season acquisitions and spending to the salary cap, Bergevin greatly raised expectations. After some early success, Montreal has won just two of their last nine games, and in reality, they had no business winning those games either.

Although Bergevin upgraded his 24th ranked team, there remains two glaring holes: no elite centre and no left-handed top-pairing defenceman. With the lineup deficit, the Canadiens have had to compensate. When things were going well, the Habs got scoring from newcomers, contributions from the defence and solid goaltending.

Right now the Canadiens are not generating high quality scoring chances, just 21 shots on goal tonight. And defensively, this team is an absolute mess.

My colleague Brian sent this message after the game: “Very fragile team. Got off to a good start tonight. Went sideways when the Jets responded.”

He’s absolutely right. In addition to the new systems and style of play, Dominique Ducharme has to find a way to restore his players’ confidence.

Post-game the Jets’ players talked about perseverance through 60 minutes. For Montreal, they are folding at the first sign of adversity. This rather inexperienced coaching staff has its hands full. Because this season, Bergevin expects results.

Post-game Quotes

Dominique Ducharme

  • “We’re a little fragile right now. It’s normal. We have to find a way to control the things that we have the ability to control. We didn’t do good work in that aspect of the game. We made mistakes that led to scoring chances and goals.”

Jonathan Drouin

  • “Small mistakes hurt us tonight against a team with a lot of talent offensively. We’ll have to look at that to try and understand what isn’t working. We have to come back with a big game against them on Saturday.”

Phillip Danault

  • “We have to be more intense for 60 minutes. I think we stopped playing and they scored two quick goals. We have to be stronger than that. We had the lead. We know that Winnipeg is an offensive machine. They’re capable of scoring goals up and down the lineup. We have to play 60 minutes. It’s important for us.”
