Montreal Canadiens PRESS RELEASE
MONTREAL – Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin announced Thursday the acquisition of defenseman Bryan Allen from the Anaheim Ducks, in return for forward Rene Bourque.
Allen, 34, recorded one assist in six games thus far with the Ducks in 2014-15, averaging 18:12 of ice time per game. He recorded four shots on goal, 11 hits, 10 blocked shots and served four penalty minutes. He missed 14 games due to a lower-body injury.
Since he first joined the NHL back in 2000-01, Allen has recorded a total of 135 points (29 goals, 106 assists) in 716 regular season games. He scored five game winning goals. The 6’05” and 223 lbs forward also served 837 penalty minutes and displays a +28 plus/minus differential.
A native of Kingston, Ontario, Allen was selected in the first round, fourth overall, by the Vancouver Canucks at the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. In his NHL career, he played for the Canucks (216 games), the Florida Panthers (284 games), the Carolina Hurricanes (101 games) and the Ducks (115 games).
Allen was selected to the OHL First All-Star Team in 1999. He won a silver medal with Team Canada at the 1999 World Junior Championship.
The 32-year old Rene Bourque registered two assists in 13 games with the Canadiens thus far this season, averaging 12:10 of ice time per game. The Lac La Biche, Alberta native played in a total of 141 career regular season games with the Canadiens since joining the team in a trade with the Calgary Flames on January 12, 2012.
The addition of Allen will help the Habs blue line immensely as his size & physical play will only help to solidify the wall in-front of Carey Price.
Down the stretch & into the playoffs the Habs will need Allen’s grit & tenacity to calm things down & gain control with teams who have in mind to take liberties on Price.
A good trade in my opinion as it frees up cap space & yet adds size to the D good call Marc Bergevin another rabbit out of the hat for you.
Bergevin should be runner up for coach of the year in my opinion if things keep going in the direction up who would have thought that the Habs would be #1 in the NHL standings.
