Bulldogs win battle of Ontario with 2-1 win over Marlies

The Hamilton Bulldogs defeated their archrival the Toronto Marlies 2-1 at Ricoh Coliseum on Sunday afternoon. Cedrick Desjardins made 35 saves on 36 shots to earn the victory.

While on the power play, Hamilton opened the game’s scoring at 7:13 of the opening frame. Shawn Belle blasted a shot that was tipped by Mike Glumac past Toronto starting goaltender Justin Pogge. Yannick Weber also earned an assist on the play.

Hamilton starting goaltender Cedrick Desjardins faced 20 shots, stopping them all in the second period as Toronto kept the pressure on the ‘Dogs. Toronto nearly got on the scoreboard when a Marlies player sent a shot through Desjardins’ five-hole but the netminder blocked the puck from crossing the line. Robbie Earl also earned a breakaway but missed the net with his shot.

Ben Ondrus tied the game 1-1 at 6:57 of the final frame. Darryl Boyce sent the puck to Ondrus, who fired a shot through the legs of Desjardins.

The Bulldogs regained the lead at 17:07 of the third stanza. Desharnais raced down the left side before releasing a shot. The puck deflected off Marlies defenceman Staffan Kronwall’s stick and over the glove of Pogge to give Hamilton a 2-1 lead.
