Bergevin’s Contract Efficiency

In the current flat salary cap environment of the NHL, general managers who can fully leverage performance out of each contract are the ones who are the most successful. The folks at the Athletic have developed a model to measure contract efficiency.

As you might expect, at the top of the list of best contracts in the NHL, you’ll find Colorado’s Nathan McKinnon and Cale Makar and Edmonton’s Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. And when the results are tallied for every regular skater on the team who are not on their entry-level deal, it is possible to rank each team by how efficiently they spend their contract dollars.

According to the model, the Canadiens rank 19th in the NHL in terms of how efficiently  Marc Bergevin is managing the players contracts and Montreal’s salary cap.

Players like Brendan Gallagher, Tyler Toffoli, Jake Evans, Jeff Petry and Artturi Lehkonen are evaluated as bringing surplus value relative to their salary. At the other end of the spectrum, Josh Anderson, Jonathan Drouin and David Savard are seen as being massively overpaid for the value they bring to the team.

New Guys Arrive

Over the past week, the newly-signed members of the Montreal Canadiens arrived at the Bell Centre to begin their Habs journey. Mathieu Perreault, David Savard, and Mike Hoffman visited the Canadiens’ facilities for the first time as Habs. They tried on their new jerseys, were fitted for gear and received a full tour of the dressing room, weight room and arena.

Full Arena in Winnipeg

The Winnipeg Jets arena has a name change for the 2021-22 NHL season now known at the Canada Life Centre. And this season, the Jets plan to welcome 15,321 fans back for each game, selling the arena to full capacity. But there’s a catch.

The Jets will require all fans to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated for COVID-19 to attend their home games. In addition, it will be mandatory to wear a mask in the arena. The policy also applies to all employees and event staff.
