We pick up the Habs’ Round 2 series at Game 3 this week, the first time the Canadiens would host the Bruins on their home ice in this year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs.  A familiar scenarios presented itself as the Habs mounted a three-goal lead.  Tomas Plekanec led off the scoring in the first period, followed by an out-of-the-penalty-box breakaway goal by P.K. Subban.  Dale Weise added to the tally in the second period, but then the Canadiens allowed a couple of Bruins goals.  Lars Eller sealed the game in the final frame with an empty-net goal.  Final score:  Canadiens, 4-2.  (Read our full recap here: Bruins Can’t Handle Habs Speed)

Two days later the Canadiens didn’t have as much luck.  Missed chances and a lack of energy led to an offensive struggle.  Carey Price kept his team alive by stopping anything the Bruins threw his way, but the game ended scoreless in regulation which forced an extra period.  Matt Fraser managed to get a puck into the Habs net just over a minute into overtime after a defensive miscue.  Final score: Bruins, 1-0 (OT). The Canadiens headed back to Boston for Game 5, with Danny Briere a healthy scratch for the evening.  Plekanec had a less-then-stellar performance and found himself in the penalty box for two Bruins power play goals timed just 32 seconds apart.  Brendan Gallagher scored a goal in the second period, and Subban netted a power play goal in the third period but it wasn’t enough to reclaim the lead.  Final score: Bruins, 4-2.  (Read our full recap here: Too Many Passengers )

Facing elimination, the Habs journeyed back to home ice and came out with a determination and drive to win.  Eller potted the first goal, followed by Max Pacioretty.  Then Thomas Vanek put one past Tuuka Rask and slid home an empty net goal in the final period.  Price shut down the Bruins at every turn, and the shutout propelled them into a Game 7 showdown.  Final score: Canadiens, 4-0.  (Read our full recap here: Price, Pacioretty Lead a Team Effort )

On Wednesday night it came down to one last game to determine who would advance to the next round.  Facing a hostile Boston crowd at TD Garden, the Canadiens stuck first with a goal from Weise in the opening frame.  They carried that momentum throughout the game, while a sloppy Bruins team tried to regain ground.  Pacioretty added to the score with a goal in the second and Briere came through with an outstanding power play goal.  Final score:  Canadiens, 3-1.  (Read our full recap here:  Habs Outplayed, Outwitted, Outlasted Bruins)

The Canadiens now advance to the Eastern Conference Finals on Saturday, where they will take on the formidable Henrik Lundqvist and the New York Rangers.  Until then, we’ve got plenty of content to keep you busy reading about your favourite team! All Habs Three Weekly Stars – Playoffs, Round 2

1st Star:  Carey Price

There is no question that Carey Price has been the Canadiens leader and MVP of the playoffs so far. Bruins coach Claude Julien singled out Price as the reason the Habs eliminated his team in round 2.

2nd Star:  P.K. Subban

P.K. Subban’s production trailed off as the series went on but he still tallied four goals and three assists.

3rd Star:  Lars Eller, Brendan Gallagher, Andrei Markov, Max Pacioretty, Tomas Plekanec, Thomas Vanek

The 3rd star goes to a group of players who contributed both offensively and defensively to the series win. They are Eller, Gallagher, Plekanec with four points each and Markov, Pacioretty, Vanek with five points each.
