 Training camp: October 6

  • The biggest question of training camp was answered on Sunday when it became clear that goaltender Dustin Tokarski will backup Carey Price for the 2014-15 season with Peter Budaj being traded to the Winnipeg Jets (more below.)
  • But there are still several roster decisions to be made including the destinations of Jacob de la Rose, Jiri Sekac, Michael Bournival, Nathan Beaulieu, Jarred Tinordi and Francis Bouillon.

Upcoming:

Opening night of the 2014-15 regular season on Wednesday October 8, 7:00 pm: Montreal Canadiens vs Toronto Maple Leafs (Air Canada Centre)

► Budaj is a Jet

  • As mentioned above, the Canadiens goaltending situation, uncertain since last year’s playoffs has been settled with the trade of Peter Budaj. The Canadiens also gave up prospect Patrick Holland in exchange for forward Eric Tangradi. Holland and Tangradi both played for their new AHL teams, the IceCaps and Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon.
  • Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin discussed the trade, “I would like to thank Peter Budaj who has been an outstanding teammate and stood tall for us over the past three seasons. This transaction enables our team to make room for Dustin Tokarski. Eric Tangradi is a young veteran with 136 NHL games under his belt. He adds depth to our group up front and provides us with more options when we will need help coming from our affiliate team in Hamilton.”
  • Budaj posted a message to fans on Twitter: “Thanks for all the support habs fans. It was a privilege to be part of Montreal Canadiens…. But I am very excited to join the Jets.”
  • Peter Budaj has one year left on his contract at $1.4 million. He will now serve has backup for Ondrej Pavelec. You can check out the official release here.

  • It was reported that Peter Budaj had requested a trade once the playoffs ended last June.

► Parenteau hopes for good year

  • P.A. Parenteau seems to be a great fit thus far in Montreal. What everyone is waiting for is to see if he can bounce back from a poor season last year and transition to his new team.
  • Parenteau explains his situation, “My motivation level is very high right now. When you don’t have the season you want the year before, you come into the next year healthy and set high expectations for yourself. I think management’s expectations are high, too. I’m really looking forward to starting the year for real. I want to prove things. I know that I’m a better player than what I showed last year. I’m feeling good on and off the ice. It’s been an adjustment to come over here and play at home. It’s really special, though. It’s almost weird to a point to still be in Quebec this time of year, but I’m wrapping my head around it pretty well. Everything is falling into place.”
  • Parenteau has been playing with David Desharnais and Max Pacioretty and they seem to be creating chemistry as time goes on. Parenteau had this to say about his linemates, “I’m very comfortable playing with Patch and Davey. They’re good players. When I give them the puck, I know that it’s going to come back my way. That makes the game a lot easier, when all of the guys on the line are good with the puck. I think we can bring out the best in one another. Patch is such a great shooter, and Davey is a great playmaker. When you mix that together, you’re going to see results pretty quickly. The chances are going to come with the talent we have on the line. It’s still early, but it’s been fun.” Full story is here.

► Bring on the regular season

  • The preseason is over and the Canadiens are looking forward to the start of the regular season. Montreal was eliminated in the Eastern Conference Final last spring, having had a terrific Stanley Cup run.  That certainly gave fans hope for the upcoming season. The team has a lot to live up to, but there are 82 games before playoffs begin and that’s a lot of hockey to be played.
  • Regarding the season, P.K. Subban said, “I think everybody’s excited about starting the regular season now and I think we’ve had enough exhibition games, but everybody’s got to go through it. It’s part of the process. We feel good about using these exhibition games to get ourselves into game shape, but now the hockey means something, so it’s exciting, for sure. Everybody wants to beat us, we have the most Stanley Cups in the league. We’re the number one target (because) other than the Stanley Cup champions, we’re the next ones in line; everybody’s trying to catch us.”
  • Head coach Michel Therrien, reflected on training camp, saying “Looking back at our camp as a whole, I’m taking away a lot of positives. The guys reported to camp in great shape and with good attitudes. They competed throughout. We came out strong tonight, but I think you could see that starting from the second period, the guys wanted to get on with the regular season already. The concentration wasn’t there anymore, but altogether, I’m extremely pleased.” Full story here.
