All Habs Headlines: Friday September 26, 2014

On this day in hockey history… 1925 –  NY Americans purchased the roster of the suspended-Hamilton Tigers for $75,000 when the Hamilton franchise was dropped from the NHL. At the same time, the new Pittsburgh team bought out the Pittsburgh Yellow Jackets of the U.S. Amateur league.

Happy Birthday to former Canadiens forward Craig Darby (1972).

 Training camp schedule: September 26

  • Montreal Canadiens vs Colorado Avalanche (Pepsi Colisee – Quebec City) 7:00 pm.
  • Lineup for Thursday’s game: Coach Michel Therrien shared this about the lineup for Thursday’s game, “We’ll give (Alexei) Emelin and (P.K.) Subban time to work together on Thursday night against Colorado. They’re a duo that can play physical hockey. They’ve got one offensive guy, and one who’s a little bit more defensive. Emelin will have a chance to play on his strong side, which we believe will be a big advantage for him.”
  • Therrien also confirmed that Carey Price will play on Thursday against the Avalanche and that Peter Budaj will be in the lineup as well.
  • After the game Thursday, the plan is to give Price three full exhibition games with Budaj and Dustin Tokarski getting one game each.

Upcoming:

Sunday September 28, 6:00 pm: Washington Capitals vs Montreal Canadiens (Bell Centre)
Wednesday October 1, 8:30 pm: Montreal Canadiens vs Chicago Blackhawks (United Center)
Friday October 3, 7:30 pm: Montreal Canadiens vs Ottawa Senators (Canadian Tire Centre)
Saturday October 4, 7:00 pm: Ottawa Senators vs Montreal Canadiens (Bell Centre)

Galchenyuk wins it!

  • Alex Galchenyuk scored with 1:32 left in overtime to give the Canadiens their second straight comeback win early in the pre-season.
  • The Canadiens outshot the Avalanche in the first period 9-6, but Colorado led 1-0 after 20 minutes on a goal by Tyson Barrie set up by Nathan MacKinnon.
  • Just over eight minutes into the second period, Max Pacioretty scored on a power play to tie the game at one goal apiece.
  • Minutes after Pacioretty’s goal, the Avalanche responded. The Canadiens however were not letting Colorado leave the second period with the lead. With just over two minutes left in the second frame, P.K. Subban lit the lamp with his team’s second power play goal of the night.
  • Carey Price and Peter Budaj split the goaltending duties for the Habs.
  • In his Canadiens pre-season debut it was not a great game for P.A. Parenteau who not only finished the game with a minus-2 rating but both Avalanche goal scorers were his responsibility. Parenteau  requested to play in both games against his former team.
  • Colorado coach Patrick Roy said that Parenteau became expendable for the Avalanche as he was not deemed to be a top-6 player.
  • Danny Briere did not play on Thursday but will be in the lineup for the Avalanche on Friday night in Quebec City against the Canadiens.
  • Canadiens lines, defense pairings and goaltenders during Thursday’s game:

Max Pacioretty – David Desharnais – P.A. Parenteau
Nikita Sherbak – Alex Galchenyuk – Brendan Gallagher
Brandon Prust – Manny Malhotra – Christian Thomas
Michael Bournival – Charles Hudon – Travis Moen

Alexei Emelin – P.K. Subban
Nathan Beaulieu – Mike Weaver
Davis Drewiske – Greg Pateryn

Carey Price – Peter Budaj

 Update on injured players

  • It was announced Thursday that Michael McCarron will miss the next six weeks due to a shoulder injury that he sustained during Tuesday night’s game against the Bruins. The good news is that there is no fracture.

 Weaver playing the role

  • Mike Weaver has been partnered with Nathan Beaulieu for the preseason and is doing everything in his power to be a role model for the youngster. Weaver has been doing a good job to pass on all the little details that can help Beaulieu to contribute to the team but also to help him grow as a hockey player.
  • Weaver discussed playing with Beaulieu, “I think he’s a great skater and great with the puck. He’s learning from a pretty good player who’s teaching him the ropes. That’s what I always found in my first year in the pros, that being around the older guys really helped me out the most. (We need to keep) it simple. It’s going to be our first game and the first game is always the toughest to get your legs going and to get into it for three full periods. Just keeping it simple, and for him, to get in on the play at every opportunity and create some offense while being responsible on the defensive side.” Full story here.
