On this day in hockey history… 1981 –  Edmonton’s Wayne Gretzky became the first player in NHL history to get eight career hat tricks before age 21, when he scored four times (and added an assist) in an 11-4 win over the visiting L.A. Kings.

► Montreal Canadiens: November 25

  • The Canadiens did not practice on Monday or Tuesday.
  • Defenceman Nathan Beaulieu and Drayson Bowman were assigned to Hamilton on Monday.
  • The Canadiens annual blood drive took place today from 8:00 – 7:00 pm.

► A billion reasons.

  • The Montreal Canadiens have an estimated value of $1 billion (yes, with a ‘B’) according to Forbes magazine. That puts them third just behind the New York Rangers and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
  • From Forbes, “Fueled by a new Canadian media deal with Rogers Communications that begins with the 2014-15 season, the average NHL team value rose 18.6% during the past year, to an all-time high of $490 million. The 12-year, $4.6 billion agreement, which gave Rogers rights to all NHL games in Canada, including the Stanley Cup Playoffs and Stanley Cup Final, on all of its platforms, in all languages, is worth 2.6 times more annually than the league’s previous Canadian deals.”

► Lucic has become a punch line.

  • Fans around the NHL are starting to understand something that Canadiens fans have known for a long time: the Bruins Milan Lucic is a joke.
  • According to Yahoo Sports’ Greg Wyshynski, “Lucic is seen as a whiner. A complainer. A cheap-shot artist. A guy who can’t beat you so he threatens to murder you, and then follows through with his vengeance at the most inopportune and detrimental time. And, perhaps most frustratingly for Bruins fans, a guy on pace for about 11 goals this season.”
  • In a previous All Habs Headlines post we presented the video of Lucic getting dropped with one punch by Columbus Blue Jackets defenceman Dalton Prout. Afterwards, Lucic threatened Prout that he would have two more games this season to get even.
  • Wyshynski continued, “So after putting tape to taint on Danny DeKeyser, Lucic’s indignation is treated like a joke. After his petulant “I’m going to murder you!” handshake line greeting with the Montreal Canadiens, his threats are a joke. After watching him take a run at Alexei Emelin, whom he threatened on that handshake line, with 1:20 left in the game down by a goal in Montreal, he’s treated like a joke.”

► Desharnais for Perron?

  • It’s no secret that David Desharnais is the weakest link in a group of Canadiens forwards. His numbers, both regular and fancy stats place him at the bottom of most categories particularly when factoring in his ice-time and, as a favorite of coach Michel Therrien, his pampered position in the lineup. If the Habs are to contend for the Stanley Cup, it will have to be without the teacher’s pet.
  • It’s also no secret that the Edmonton Oilers are looking to deal and they have an abundance of wingers.  Jim Matheson, of the Edmonton Journal, suggests that a Desharnais for left-winger David Perron makes sense for both teams.
  • From Matheson, “Would the Montreal Canadiens give up shifty five-foot-seven, 170-pound David Desharnais for Perron, feeling they could move Alex Galchenyuk into the middle there? Desharnais, 28, makes $3.5 million this season and the following two. After Max Pacioretty, there isn’t a veteran left-winger who can provide offence, although Czech rookie Jiri Sekac is an up-and-comer with six goals.”
  • TSN’s Darren Dreger confirmed that Perron is being shopped.

► Bruins scrap

  • Seems that there is some frustration these days in the Bruins camp.

► Sherbak update

  • On Saturday night, Canadiens’ prospect, Nikita Sherbak, was taken off the ice on a stretcher during his Western Hockey League game.
  • Sherbak was hit during the second period and was taken to a local hospital as a precautionary measure; the team thought he may have sustained a back injury.
  • The initial hospital tests indicated that he had no head or neck injuries. Further tests were taken to determine whether or not there was serious damage done to the back or nerves. These tests also came back negative, indicating there were no fractures. Scherbak was discharged without having to stay overnight. Reportedly he left the hospital on crutches.
  • It is unclear how much time he will miss from the Silvertips lineup.

 

► Making time for fans

  • Players always try to make time to show their appreciation to their fans. Canadiens’ forward, Tomas Plekanec, does just that as he posed for a picture with his fan club.
