It gets tougher for Isles

The Isles have gotten off to the worst start in the league for a variety of reasons. Sutton’s return nearly coincided with fellow defenseman Freddy Meyer’s departure on Saturday. The team announced yesterday that Meyer underwent sports-hernia surgery and will be out between two weeks and a month.

Meyer is just the latest Isles defenseman to have missed time with an injury, joining Martinek , who skated yesterday, Chris Campoli and Sutton.

And of course, there’s Rick DiPietro, who has played just seven periods this season and is expected to miss his third straight game tonight. He was placed on injured reserve following his undisclosed lower body injury Saturday, but he could play Monday against Columbus.

There hasn’t been much good news for the Islanders and their rookie head coach during this young season and they face another tough task tonight against the Habs (7 p.m., MSG+, WMJC-94.3 FM).

The Canadiens have won seven of their last eight and are playing like one of the best teams in the NHL, while the Isles have earned a league-low five points. They haven’t led in a game since beating Tampa Bay on Oct. 16 – six games ago.
