Mike Weaver – Defenseman
	Height: 5’9” Weight: 183 lbs. Shoots: Right Born: May 2nd, 1978 Birthplace: Bramalea, Ontario, Canada Drafted: Free agent: signed by Atlanta Thrashers on June 15th, 2000. Acquired: March 4th, 2014 in exchange for a fifth-rounder in 2015.
The Specs
The 35 year old rearguard was likely not acquired for his offensive talents, as he has had seven career goals in the NHL. Rather, his defensive skills had enabled him to become one of Florida’s top penalty-killers, used in crucial situations including key faceoffs to neutralize plays.
The Skinny
He may not be the biggest, and he may make a blunder every now and then, but his longevity speaks to his ability to overcome these things.
What you’ve probably heard by now
He has had stints in Atlanta, Los Angeles, Vancouver, Pittsburgh, St. Louis and most recently, Florida. He’s a defenseman under 6 feet tall who happens to be 35 years of age, and with almost 600 games played in the league. He is an impending unrestricted free agent on July 1.
What you may not know
This is actually the first NHL trade he’s involved in–he’s mostly been signed as a free agent, with the exception of being claimed off waivers by Vancouver in 2007. He never played for them, but the Guelph Storm drafted him in the seventh round almost 19 years ago, in 1995. He instead played for Michigan State University, on the same squad as NHLers Shawn Horcoff, Adam Hall, John-Michael Liles and recently-traded goaltender Ryan Miller. He was named the NCAA (CCHA) Best Defensive Defenseman two years in a row. February and March are his most productive months, as 32 of his 79 career points have come within those months. “I remember every one of my goals, I don’t score a whole lot.” – when asked about his first NHL goal. He also admits to having been on pace for the most games played with no goals scored at the time.
