An excerpt from The Hockey News (Sam McCaig):
Brendan Shanahan, RW – He shoots, he scores, he leads. There’s no secret to Shanahan’s game, although precisely what he has left to give is something to ponder. Know this, though: whatever he has left at age 39, Shanahan will leave it on the ice. The team that drafted him, the Devils, as well as the Habs appear to be chasing the 600-goal winger.
Habster:
I can almost gurantee Brendan Shanahan is not on the Canadiens radar. Bob Gainey will focus his attention and money on trying to sign Mats Sundin or until he makes a decision about his future plans.
If Sundin decides to go elsewhere, there could be some casual interest in the 39 year old Shanahan.
He does bring a good leadership presence into the locker room and probably still has the hands but how much gas is left in the tank or should I say the legs?
I think Hockey News writer Sam McCaig is basing this rumour on Gainey’s previous years of interest in Shanahan and not from any hard or reliable sources.
