On this day in hockey history… 1976 — Canada won its first “Canada Cup”. 1996 — Borje Salming, Al Arbour, Bobby Bauer and announcer Bob Cole were all inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. 1999 — Longtime Nordiques Michel Goulet was inducted into the Hall of Fame.

► PK follows tradition

  • Like Saku Koivu and Max Pacioretty before him, P.K. Subban is making a generous donation to the Montreal Children’s Hospital. Subban has pledged $10 million over the next seven years from his foundation.
  • Subban has been named to the hospital’s board of directors and an atrium in the new hospital has been named in his honour.
  • On the occasion, Subban said, “Last year Montreal made a long-term commitment toward me. Now it’s my turn to make an engagement to Montreal. Montreal has become my second home. Montrealers have taken me into their hearts for the past five years that I’ve been here… and I hope to remain here for a very, very long time.”

► Habs training camp

  • Montreal Canadiens training camp opens on Thursday with medical exams at the bell Sports Complex in Brossard. The first on-ice session for the 58 camp attendees comes on Friday morning.
  • Read the full announcement including the list of players here.
  • From the list of players, you will notice that several will be sporting new numbers this season. Greg Pateryn drops No. 64 and will be wearing No. 6. Zach Fucale was wearing No. 30 at rookie camp and that will stick for training camp rather than No. 70. Christian Thomas picked up No. 20 trading in his old No. 60. And Sven Andrighetto moves from No. 58 to 42.
  • Newcomers to the team will be wearing the following numbers: Zack Kassian – 8, Alex Semin – 13, Tomas Fleischmann – 15, and Mark Barbeiro – 45.

► Habs send a couple down

  • Following their rookie tournament the Canadiens have sent multiple prospects back to their junior teams prior to the team’s big camp.
  • A pair of 2015 picks in Jeremiah Addison (7th round) and Simon Bourque (6th round) have been sent back to their junior teams along with 2014 pick Daniel Audette.
  • Audette had 29 goals and 73 points in 68 games with the Sherbrooke Phoenix and wore a letter. In the six playoff games the team played he had a pair of goals and four assists.
  • Addison, who was drafted 207th overall last year, had 19 goals and 47 points in the 63 regular season games he played with the Ottawa 67’s. The 6-foot-0 winger had six goals in as many games along with a fight.
  • Simon Bourque, whom the Canadiens used the 177th pick to select, had 38 points in 68 games with the Rimouski Océanic last year. He have a larger role on the team this year with the departure of Samuel Morin among others.
  • The team also released Dryden Hunt, who was with the team on a tryout, and Sam Studnicka who was added to the Canadiens rookie camp roster due to injuries.

► Defensively aware

  • Most detractors of Alex Galchenyuk playing centre point out the American-born forward isn’t developed enough defensively to play at the position, Galchenyuk will still focus on it however. “I gained experience and confidence over the years and the summer was beneficial in that direction too; I’m ready for the new season,” Galchenyuk proclaimed to RDS.
  • Last year the 21-year old had a 20 goal, 46 point season and is looking to improve on that without putting a ceiling on his potential saying, “I never set a number in mind, I don’t want to set myself a limit because I just want to help the team my best.”
  • “It’s flattering to hear that, but I still have to accomplish a lot of work to get there. To be honest, I don’t think too much about it, first I want to play at the highest possible level, ” the former third overall pick said on being on of the best young players in the game.
  • Galchenyuk’s defensive game isn’t perfect but he has some pretty good two-way players to learn from saying, “Of course, I try to learn from the veterans and I can include some aspects in my game. This is a very important part (defensive play) and I have to work on it a lot too.”
  • RDS caught up with the centreman at a promotional event for Bauer, the new equipment he will be wearing and he gave a somewhat robotic, yet interesting answer when asked about his new equipment, “Yes , because it’s very important to have the proper equipment . It can give us a better chance to reach your potential.”
  • During last year’s playoffs, Galchenyuk changed his stick model multiple times in attempt to break out of his scoring drought. He was formerly with CCM.

► Ready to take it to another octane

  • The goaltending scenario is clogged in Montreal with Carey Price, Dustin Tokarski and even Mike Condon but regardless, Zachary Fucale is ready to take his game to the next level.
  • “We all want it to go as fast as possible , but it’s important not to burn stage. I’m excited to make the jump to the professional ranks. I’ll give everything to deserve a position with the Canadiens,” he told the media following the team’s rookie tournament.
  • “Ultimately , if it does not work [in the AHL] , I trust they will take the best decision for my development . You have to start somewhere. In all organizations, there are young goalies who are in the same situation as me. “
  • Fucale’s final season in the QMJHL was rough to say the least but he won’t let that be the end of him saying, “It wasn’t the perfect season for me. I lived through difficult times and I had to overcome adversity, he admits. But I am stronger because of it. If there is one thing I remember from my junior career is that I proved I could be up to the task in the big games. I feel ready to make the jump in the pros. I gained enough experience to tell me I’m ready.”

► Bozon only concerned about how

  • “I’m not looking to score the prettiest goals, but I’m trying to loge the puck into the back of the net,” the Frenchman told the Journal de Montreal.
  • Tim Bozon’s off-ice medical issues have been well documented but now the focus has been shifted to his on-ice performance.
  • “I’m going to start from zero again this season, but for different reasons. I want to fight on equal terms against other players. That aren’t further behind or ahead for me. I have to make my spot and it’s a new challenge every day. The challenge will now be to play in the pros . “

  • After 14 years of solid hockey, Simon Gagné has finally decided to call it quits.
  • Gagné, who spent the majority of his career playing with the Philadelphia Flyers, played 822 games in his career and scored 291 goals and 601 assists. In the 109 playoff games he participated in he had 37 goals and 59 points along with a couple trips to the Stanley Cup Final with his dreams coming true a single time.
  • Injuries were ultimately the Sainte-Foy, Quebec native’s downfall although he sat out all of last season following the passing of his father, Pierre, who passed away due to liver cancer.
  • It’s rather remarkable that Gagné played in as many games as he did, being as injury prone as he was. He never played a full 82-game season in his entire 14 year NHL career.
  • Over those 14 seasons the former 22nd overall pick played for the Flyers, Lightning, Kings and Bruins.

► Nightmare on Leafs square

  • Steven Stamkos is due for a contract extension next season and there have been many, mainly fan generated, rumours about the sniper possibly returning home and playing for the Leafs.
  • One Leafs fan took it to another level by putting a Toronto Maple Leafs jersey with Stamkos’ name and number on it in Toronto’s dressing room.

► Down to Ray

  • The Lightning’s backup goalie situation took a hit earlier this offseason when the team announced that former first round pick Andrei Vasilevskiy would be put 2-3 months to remove a blood clot. That situation has taken another hit as the man who was supposed to fill in the Vailevskiy, Kristers Gudlevskis, suffered an upper body injury in a rookie tournament game.
  • Should his injury be serious, which many suspect it isn’t, Tampa Bay’s lone option left would be to go with Ray Emery, whom they invited to training camp on a professional tryout.
  • Emery, who was in the KHL in 2008-09, had a revival of sorts in 2012-13 with the Chicago Blackhawks where he posted a 1.94 GAA and a .922 save percentage. That performance got him a contract with the Philadelphia Flyers who had him compete for the starting job in camp and was ultimate out played by Steve Mason, which is hard to do.
  • Last season with the Flyers he had a .894 save percentage and a 3.06 GAA. 31 games played he had a 10-11-7 record.
