The Hockey News 2008 Mock Draft………Habs select Mikhail Stefanovich with their 25th pick

Heart and a lack of desire are the issues with Mikhail Stefanovich.

Here are some evaluations:

NHL Central Scouting’s Chris Bordeleau

“He’s a big kid, 6’2″ and 200 pounds. He has good overall skills, but needs to improve on his work ethic and his involvement if he’s going to make it to the next level. When he is on his game, he is a good skater and has a great shot. He can really stickhandle but needs to show it more.”

Hockey’s Future (Mikhail Stefanovich):

Talent Analysis

On paper, Stefanovich looks to have all the tools that teams look for: a blend of scoring ability and size. Stefanovich’s sharpshooting abilities and offensive instincts are top notch, but his effort is inconsistent at best. Though he is willing to drive to the net, Stefanovich is a player who mainly fights through contact but doesn’t initiate physical play. His skating needs work, especially his acceleration, but his hockey sense and his ability to read to play softens the blow of this weakness.

Hockey’s Future ( Top 10 QMJHL 2008 eligibles):

Stefanovich is widely expected to be the first player from the QMJHL to be selected at the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, likely to fall somewhere in the middle third of the first round. The Belarussian product was selected by the Remparts in the CHL Import Draft after the Bashkirov twins experiment failed one year in. Stefanovich is a talented forward, with the welcome blend of size, speed, and strength, boasting great stick-handling ability, a strong skating stride, and a willingness to go into high-traffic areas to make plays and battle for the puck. Stefanovich currently sits atop all QMJHL rookies in points (64) as well as leading all rookies in goals (32). He appeared both in the World Junior Hockey Championships (for the second straight year) for Belarus, as well as the CHL Top Prospects Game.
