A new poll suggests the Montreal Canadiens have overtaken the Toronto Maple Leafs as Canada’s team.

The Canadian Press Harris/Decima survey found 40 per cent of Canadians identified the Habs as the nation’s hockey team of choice, compared with 24 per cent for Leafs.

A similar poll last year had the Leafs on top with 24 per cent and the Canadiens trailing with 22 per cent.

The Habs are the only Canadian team remaining in the Stanley Cup playoffs, while Toronto missed post-season action for the third year in a row.

The survey of more than 1,000 people across the country began April 24, after the Ottawa Senators and Calgary Flames had been eliminated from playoff action, and ended April 28.
It has a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
