Game Report

A Canadiens goaltender had not shutout the Chicago Blackhawks in Montreal since Patrick Roy on March 19, 1988. Until tonight. Jake Allen registered the first shutout of the season by a Canadiens goaltender.

It’s not to say that Allen was severely tested on this night. The anemic Blackhawks attack managed 22 shots on goal and just five high-danger scoring chances in this game. Chicago also went 0-for-4 on the power play, including 65 seconds with a 5-on-3 advantage.

But with the Habs up 1-0 near the end of the first period, Allen made a right toe save on Blackhawks forward Andreas Athanasiou who had sprung in all alone after a bad giveaway by David Savard. It was a turning point in this game.

The first 40 minutes of this game was characterized by sloppy, low-event hockey. But the third period was clearly won by the Canadiens. Their aggressive approach paid off in the final frame as the Hawks began to break down resulting in three Habs markers.

Joel Armia and Christian Dvorak each had a goal and an assist. Dvorak was a dominant 90 percent at the faceoff dot. Justin Barron scored his second goal in the last three games.

The Canadiens have now won three straight games for only the second time this season.

Post-game Quotes

Marty St. Louis

  • “We got better as the game went on. It was not an exciting game in the first two periods. We were a little lacking in execution. In third, we showed our best face. We were very strong in the third and that’s what made the difference.”

Jake Allen

  • “The first two periods weren’t particularly exciting, but I liked how we put our foot on the accelerator in the third. Sometimes you just want to defend yourself and you shoot yourself in the foot. This time, the whole group pushed to get the next goal.”
