Game Report

There was a National Hockey League game at the Bell Centre on Sunday night but this match was certainly the undercard. This night belonged to the memory of Guy Lafleur.

While the Montreal Canadiens game presentation folks looked after the music and the tribute video, it was Habs fans who ran the show. Their emotions and adoration for Lafleur were fully on display as the clips played, returning the Bell Centre to the dynasty years of the 1970’s.

When Canadiens public address announcer Michel Lacroix tried to call for a moment of silence, the crowd asserted their control, only applauding more enthusiastically. The ovation lasted a full 11 minutes.

But there was a game to be played on this night. And it involved the Canadiens most bitter rivalry, the Boston Bruins.

This season the Bruins and Canadiens are at opposite ends of the standings. Boston is fully 50 points ahead of Montreal. And for two periods, it looked to be a cakewalk for the Bruins leading 4-1 after 40 minutes.

With a gutsy third period effort, perhaps fueled by the emotions of the evening, the Canadiens staged a comeback scoring twice in the final frame.

In the end, the Bruins prevailed and swept the four-game season series. The Canadiens lost their ninth game in a row.
