On this day in hockey history

1983— Montreal traded Robert Picard to the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for Winnipeg’s 3rd round choice in the 1984 Entry Draft. The Canadiens used the pick 7 months later to select goaltender Patrick Roy.

2003 — Mark Messier scored twice to give him 1,851 career points, passing Gordie Howe for second place in the NHL career point list, as the Rangers won 3-0 over the visiting Dallas Stars.

Healthy Scratches: De La Rose, Morrow

  • Nikita Scherbak is out six weeks following knee surgery
  • Carey Price is day-to-day with a lower-body injury

St-Louis defends Pacioretty

  • Speaking with TVA Martin St-Louis commented on Max Pacioretty‘s role.
  • St. Louis said that Pacioretty is the type of player who “lives and breathes hockey.” St. Louis added that, given the results, he can’t be feeling satisfied that his job is done at the end of the day.
  • St. Louis confirmed that Max is a “pro in every sense of the word, taking the team to heart.” Martin added that Pacioretty has enormous responsibilities but knows that his primary responsibility is to score.

 Shipachyov ships out

  • According to Sportsnet, Vadim Shipachyov’s contract will be terminated following the 30-year-old clearing the unconditional waiver process.
  • The news comes just one day after the Golden Knights decided to suspend the Russian for failing to report to the clubs AHL affiliate.
  • Shipachyov has decided to return to Russia.

Scherbak sure has bad luck

  • Nikita Scherbak will miss the next six weeks after undergoing surgery on his right knee.
  • Scherbak hasn’t played since Oct. 26 when he was taken awkwardly into the boards in a game against the Los Angeles Kings.
  • Scherbak had a blazing start in the AHL prior to his call up with nine points in six games. He had shown flashes of that solid play in the NHL prior to his injury.

Montoya in the hot seat

  • A difficult start to the Canadiens season has just been made worse.
  • Carey Price has been declared as day-to-day with a minor injury.  This leaves Montoya as the starting goaltender until his return.

► Total recall

  • Charlie Lindgren has been recalled from Laval to be the backup to Al Montoya

Danault developing well

  • Pierre McGuire when asked about the play of Phillip Danault seemed to agree with Mitch Melnick that the 24-year-old may not be ready to be an everyday second line centre.
  • However, McGuire added, “By the end of this year, if he is a 50-plus point player… and a plus (ranking) player, that would be a sure way to tell me as I evaluate it that he would be a legitimate second line centre.”

 Irish eyes are smiling

  • Habs 2014 seventh round pick, Jake Evans, is the top line center of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
  • Evans is having a torrid start to the season with 15 points in eight games.
  • Evans has been named the BIG 10 third star of the week.
